Former Russian President -- who some analysts believe is still pulling the strings -- has said that Russia is prepared to recognise Kosovo's independence but only if "the western powers" back of the missile defence shield plans.
is a request unlikely to be furnished unless Obama is looking at dropping the missile shield anyway, in which case he may see this as an opportunity to get something out of it
The missile defence shield was the brainchild of former US President Bush, who envisioned a stockpile of missiles ready to launch in Poland, with a radar guidance system in the Czech Republic. The scheme was touted as necessary to protect against the imminent threat from Iran and N. Korea but was seen by most as a US attempt to exert control over Russia. It was then left in Obama's lap.
The move from Putin comes two months after new President Obama tried a similar trick, by telling Russia that the missile defence shield could vanish if Iran is stopped from getting nuclear weapons. Russia has been a big supporter of Iran's path to becoming a nuclear state, including their building Iran's first nuclear power plant.
Now Putin is returning the favour, saying: we'll recognise Kosovo if you do away with that nasty missile shield in one the strangest political to-and-fros I have ever seen, centred around the missile defence shield.
Opinion: Putin's Kosovo Recognition Offer Unlikely to be Taken Up
