The U.S. approved to grant 400 M1A1 Abrams to Greece

According to information of the “Hellenic Defence & Technology” magazine, the U.S. authorities approved to grant 400 M1A1 Abrams tanks to the Greek Army, which will include options between simple refurbishment – worth tens of millions dollars for all the tanks- and upgrading to a higher level of operational capability, with a higher corresponding cost. The relative Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) is expected soon.
Also according to exclusive information of the” Hellenic Defence & Technology” magazine, a Price and Availability letter was sent to U.S. authorities regarding 20 AAV7A1 and a low cost upgrade program for them. This is the first step to cover an operational requirement for 75-100 vehicles.
Additional exclusive details on these requirements as well as for Bradley IFVs, in a forthcoming issue of the “Hellenic Defence & Technology” magazine.

On Wednesday, September 28, 2011, the “IASON- 2011 ‘exercise took place on the Isle of Agios Efstratios. ‘IASON” is a regular small scale exercise, organized by the Supreme Military Command of Interior and Islands in the area of responsibility of the 88th Military Command in Limnos and is designed to eliminate an air bridgehead. In the exercise participated units of the Army, in cooperation with the Air Force and Navy which provided support fire.








 
31 Search & Rescue Operations Squadron

The Combat Search & Rescue (CSAR) training offered to qualified personnel of the Air Force is now upgraded. The establishment of the new School of Basic Training for Combat Rescuers, is an essential step to develop the capabilities of the 31 Search & Rescue Operations Squadron, satisfying a standard operational requirement. The completion of the first training course was an historic moment for the unit. The magazine Ptisi & Diastima was there to convey the atmosphere and analyze the new prospects for CSAR in Greece. You can read more in the current edition of Ptisi & Diastima (September 2011, No. 309)






 
Icarus’ at night flying with F-4s

The Friends of the Air Force “Icarus” Association is a non-profit association. Its orientation is not only in promoting the aviation idea but also in promoting in a genuine way, through its members, the work of the Hellenic Air Force in recognition of its effort.
The Association has so far 127 active members including many high school students, children full of dreams and love for the Air Force. The Association is giving these children, as well as to others, the opportunity to come closer to aircraft and know them better, rekindling their desire to become future officers of the HAF and other branches of the Armed Forces. Photos taken during visits to airports are shared to members who don’t have the opportunity to photograph, but mainly they are delivered intact to the HAF.
In the context of these activities you can see below a series of photographs taken during a visit of the Association to the 117CW at Andravida AB on Wednesday, August 10, 2011. The intention of the visit was the photographic coverage of night flights of the Unit through the camera of the President of the Board Mr.Panagiotis Panagiotopoulos.

Offset benefits’ contracts for research programmes in defence sector

Four offset benefits’ contracts that will lead to research programmes are currently in effect according to a defence ministry document forwarded to parliament, it was announced on Monday.
The document was forwarded in response to a relevant question by Democratic Left MPs Fotis Kouvelis, Thanassis Leventis, Nikos Tsoukalis and Grigoris Psarianos.
In his response Defence Minister Panos Beglitis referred to Contract No 16/00 with “Lockheed Martin” which provides that the Academy of Athens Biomedical Research Foundation will receive the sum of 1 million euros for research and Contract No 13/03 with two 2-million-euro programmes for the Academy of Athens Biomedical Research Foundation and a 39-million-euro programme for SONAC company to develop and build replicas of armoured vehicles.
Also, Contract No 02/07 with RAYTHEON provides for a US $ 1.95-million programme for Theon Sensors company to develop night vision goggles.
Contract No 03/09 with Goodrich provides for two programmes, a US $ 55,000 programme for the Army Research and Technology Centre (KETES) to develop a robotic vehicle and a US $ 980,000 for “ISI Hellas” to develop a Portable Reconnaissance Screening System for the Air Force.

Exercise: attacking ‘enemy targets’ in the Aegean by the Greek and Israeli Navy

A large scale joint exercise against hostile surface targets in conjunction with research-rescue exercise was performed by the Greek and Israel Israeli on July 24, according to defencenet.gr’s reliable sources in the Ministry of Defence. It is the first major exercise between Greek and Israeli naval vessels in the Aegean which aims to jointly tackle enemy surface vessels.
The exercise took place in the Cyclades. From the Greek side took part the frigate (F466) Themistocles, the Fast Attack Craft (P70) GRIGOROPOULOS (Class “Roussen”) and from the Israeli side the corvette (FFG-501) EILAT (VLO design) and the accompanying vessel HHEREV.
The first scenario of the exercise aimed at halting attack against friendly surface vessels from enemy ships and then conducting counter-attack firing surface-to-surface missiles. The SAR part of the exercise aimed at the “crew rescue of damaged allied ship”. Allied ships were considered the vessels of the two fleets.

The exercise went “very well” says a senior naval officer at defencenet.gr, despite the fact that it was the first time that major surface units of the two countries exerted a battle scenario. As a source from the Hellenic National Defence General Staff reported “It’s good to have a mutual understanding of the aeronautical forces of both countries in the region as they are working closely together to ensure stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
Let’s not forget that just yesterday the leader of the Turkish Cypriot pseudo-state, N. Eroglu, dared to … threaten Cyprus with a crisis if started drilling in gas fields located in the Eastern Mediterranean.
In response to this exercise, as defencenet.gr reported yesterday, Turkey refused to participate in American-Israeli aeronautical exercise Reliant Mermaid, which is conducted ​​the last ten years in the Eastern Mediterranean.
 
Δωρεάν ναυπήγηση των φρεγατών FREMM προτείνει η Γαλλία!

Mε μια μοναδική στα παγκόσμια χρονικά της αμυντικής-ναυπηγικής βιομηχανίας, η Γαλλία επανέρχεται στην πρόταση για την άμεση έναρξη ναυπήγησης των stealth φρεγατών FREMM (αφού υπάρχει ήδη από ελληνικής πλευράς ανακοινωμένη σχετική κατ’αρχήν αποδοχή της πρότασης προμήθειας τους): Σύμφωνα με τη νέα πρόταση
-Δεν θα υπάρξει καμία οικονομική επιβάρυνση της Ελλάδας επί μία πενταετία για τη ναυπήγηση των πλοίων
-Το σύνολο τους κόστους για τις εργασίες της πενταετίας θα καταβληθεί απ’ευθείας από την γαλλική κυβέρνηση, χωρίς την μεσολάβηση τραπεζών και άρα την αύξηση του κόστους ναυπήγησης λόγω τόκων χρηματοδότησης
-Μετά από πέντε χρόνια αν η Ελλάδα θέλει το πλοίο το παραλαμβάνει! Αν όχι, εντάσσεται στο γαλλικό Ναυτικό αφού με δικά του κονδύλια θα ναυπηγηθεί!
Η έναρξη της σειράς των ναυπηγήσεων θα γίνει στην Ελλάδα (πρώτο και δεύτερο σκάφος) και αν η Ελλάδα το 2016 θέλει να εντάξει το σκάφος στη δύναμη του Π.Ν., τότε θα αρχίσει να καταβάλει τμηματικά το τίμημα του πρώτου σκάφους με την καταβολή 100 εκατ. ευρώ (σύνολο κόστους ανά μονάδα, περίπου 700 εκατ. ευρώ με σημερινές τιμές).
Τα τρία πλοία (πιθανόν και ένα τέταρτο) θα έχουν ολοκληρώσει τη ναυπήγησή τους μεταξύ 2019 και 2022 ή και ενωρίτερα αν υπάρξει οξύτατη επιχειρησιακή ανάγκη.
Η ναυπηγός εταιρεία DCNS έδωσε μάχη με το γαλλικό Ναυτικό για να δεχθούν την ελληνική διαμόρφωση ή καλύτερα να προσαρμόσουν τις δικές τους ανάγκες στην ελληνική διαμόρφωση (κυριότερη διαφορά η εγκατάσταση βλημάτων επιφανείας-αέρος μικρής-μέσης ακτίνας MICA VLS, αντί των ASTER-15) αν και βέβαια και αυτό το σημείο είναι υπό συζήτηση.
Η DCNS θεωρεί ότι και οι ASTER-15 υπερκαλύπτουν τις ελληνικές επιχειρησικές ανάγκες, έστω και αν μειώνονται τα κελιά εκτόξευσης στην πλώρη για τους ASTER-30 (οι μοναδικόί SCALP Naval με 1000 χλμ. ακτίνα δράσης μένουν απείραχτοι). Θεωρούν ότι με ένα ισορροπημένο «μίγμα» ASTER-15 και ASTER-30 υπερκαλύπτονται οι επιχειρησιακές ανάγκες του σκάφους.
Εν πάση περιπτώσει φαίνεται ότι το γαλλικό Ναυτικό έχει πειστεί να χρηματοδοτήσει από τα δικά του κονδύλια το ελληνικό πρόγραμμα φρεγατών κάνοντας σαφώς οικονομικότερο το πρόγραμμα ναυπήγησης, αφού δεν θα επιβαρυνθεί με το χρηματοοικονομικό κόστους της τραπεζικής χρηματοδότησης που είχε αρχικά προταθεί.
Η πρόταση έχει ισχυρότατη πολιτική υποστήριξη και από τον πρόεδρο Σαρκοζί, αλλά και από το σοσιαλιστικό κόμμα.
Οι Γάλλοι ποντάρουν σε τρία δεδομένα για να γίνει η πρότασή τους αποδεκτή, παρά το γεγονός ότι εν γνώσει τους απευθύνονται σε μια πτωχευμένη χώρα:
-Πρώτον, η Ελλάδα δεν θα δαπανήσει ούτε ένα ευρώ για την ναυπήγηση στα δικά της ναυπηγεία των πλοίων, επί μία πενταετία και εν συνεχεία αν δεν έχει ούτε τότε πόρους, θα υπάρξει σχετική δέσμευση απορρόφησής τους από το γαλλλικό Ναυτικό. Άρα κανείς στην Ελλάδα δεν μπορεί να υποστηρίξει ότι «δεν έχουμε λεφτά», ούτε δημιουργείται χρέος που να επιβαρύνει το συνολικό δημόσιο χρέος.
-Δεύτερον, η άμεση έναρξη ναυπήγησης των FREMM θα αποτρέψει το κλείσιμο τριών ναυπηγείων: Ελευσίνας, Σκαραμαγκά και Νεωρίου. Τα ναυπηγεία αυτά μόνο με ένα μεγάλο πρόγραμμα μπορούν να επιβιώσουν και αυτό το ξέρουν όλοι.
-Τρίτον, εκτιμούν ότι η κατάσταση όπως διαμορφώνεται στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο έχει μετατρέψει μία δεδομένη επιχειρησιακή ανάγκη του Π.Ν. σε άκρως πιεστική εθνική ανάγκη της Ελλάδας ολόκληρης. Και δεν έχουν άδικο.
Oι 9 εναπομείνασες φρεγάτες “S” του Π.Ν., πέρα από το ότι έχουν μπει στην τέταρτη δεκαετία της ζωής τους, έχουν σοβαρά επιχειρησικά μειονεκτήματα στην Α.Μεσόγειο. Π.χ. μόνο δύο (!) από τα εννέα σκάφη διαθέτουν δορυφορικές επικοινωνίες!
Ποιος μπορεί να φανταστεί επιχειρησιακή δράση σκαφών επιφανείας σήμερα σε μια θάλασσα όπως η Α.Μεσόγειος χωρίς δορυφορικές επικοινωνίες; Η Α/Α άμυνά τους είναι επιεικώς περιορισμένων δυνατοτήτων και βέβαια οι δυνατότητες κρούσης στόχων εδάφους, παντελώς ανύπαρκτες.
Την ώρα που στην εθνική ΑΟΖ (και η Κύπρος είναι μέρος του ελληνικού Έθνους) έχουν ανακαλυφθεί κοιτάσματα ικανά να αλλάξουν την πορεία και την μοίρα όλων σε Ελλάδα και Κύπρο, εμείς με πολεμικά πλοία μισού αιώνα ζωής θα σταθούμε απέναντι στον άρπαγα της Ανατολής με τις υπερσύγχρονες TF-2000; Ή θα στείλουμε κορβέτες που λένε κάποιοι γραφικοί
