BREAKING: Montenegro Recognises Kosovo
09 October 2008 Podgorica _ Montenegro has recognised Kosovo’s independence from Serbia, the country's Foreign Minister Milan Rocen has announced.
"Montenegro's government has decided to undertake such a move in the best interests of Montenegro and the Montenegrin people," Rocen told reporters.
The move was a unanimous decision by the government.
The news comes despite Montenegro voting at the United Nations General Assembly in favour of Serbia’s resolution to seek the International Court of Justice’s opinion on whether or not Kosovo’s declaration of independence earlier this year was in accordance with international law. Read more:

However earlier this week, Montenegro's President Filip Vujanovic indicated the country will recognise Kosovo's independence despite bitter opposition from traditional ally Serbia.
Vujanovic said Tuesday that the decision will have to be made soon because of Montenegro's desire to become an European Union and NATO member. He said recognition of Kosovo is an "obvious condition" for integration.
On Friday Montenegro’s Parliament passed a resolution on "the necessity to speed up the processes of joining the European Union and NATO" says it will "serve as a guideline for the country's policy on the Kosovo issue."
