Greece: Zero-emissions building to open
Renewable energy was set to take a big leap forward Thursday with the inauguration of an innovative urban building so energy efficient its owners expect to sell some of the power it generates back to the state.
The five-story structure in Faliron, southern Athens, needs no fossil fuel input for its energy needs, produces zero emissions and contains a high-tech internal system that draws on both solar and geothermal energy sources and meets year-round cooling and heating demands -- while even producing some electricity on the side.
Within a decade -- once installation costs are paid for -- the building's energy needs are expected to be essentially cost free.
The project's designers say the building's integrated energy system is the first of its kind in Europe.
The public-private initiative brought together experts from Greece's National Center of Scientific Research (NCSR), the Development Ministry, the National Technical University of Athens and the University of Thessaloniki along with Sol Energy Hellas, a company that occupies the building's premises.
Designers believe that the pilot project will generate valuable information that will help users in both the public and private sectors to cut their energy bills sharply.
Use of solar panels is already extensive in Greece, one of Europe's sunniest countries, but its application is mostly limited to heating water boilers in private homes.

Diese Projekte werden den Energieverbrauch und somit auch die Emissionswerte drastisch verringern. Hoffentlich werden weitere solcher Gebäude in Griechenland Platz finden.
