Al-Jazeera To Set Up News Center In Bosnia

SARAJEVO -- Sarajevo's mayor says the international television news network Al-Jazeera will buy a local TV and radio station from city authorities and establish a regional news center in the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, RFE/RL's Balkan Service reports.

Alija Behmen said the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera will purchase indebted Studio 99 from the city government, which acquired the station several months ago in order to set up a public broadcaster for the city.

"Al-Jazeera will establish a regional office in Sarajevo, which is expected to lead to the creation of new jobs," Behmen told journalists.

He said Al-Jazeera will pay the city about 160,000 euros ($210,000) for the station, the amount the city authorities have invested in Studio 99, a music and news radio and TV station which has fallen on hard times because of rising debts and a shrinking market share.

Al-Jazeera's office in Doha declined to comment on Behmen's claim.

Studio 99 was launched in 1992, at the beginning of Bosnia's 1992-95 war and the 43-month-long siege of Sarajevo. It was widely praised for broadcasting content that promoted tolerance and multiculturalism.

It survived largely due to international funding but struggled after those sources ended their support for the station in the late 1990s.

1 April (soll kein Witzs ein)

Bosnian TV station Studio 99 has been bought by Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera says it intends to establish a regional TV centre for the Balkans based in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo.
Al Jazeera will take over the radio and television channel from the Sarajevo city government, which acquired it several months ago under a plan to establish a public broadcaster for the city, and with the station facing closure because of financial problems.
“Al Jazeera will establish a regional office in Sarajevo which is expected to lead to the creation of new jobs,” Sarajevo’s mayor Alija Behmen told local journalists.
Behmen said that the international TV network will pay the city some €163,000 in compensation for the amount the local government had already invested in the failed broadcaster.
Studio 99 was established as a private radio station in 1992 and gained recognition for promoting the values of multi ethnicity and multiculturalism during the country’s 1992-95 war.
It started television broadcasting in 1994.
Over the years it has won support from many international organisations, but with international funding drying up in late 1990s the channel has faced continual financial pressures.

Qatar-based Al Jazeera network has bought Bosnian TV station, Studio 99, as reported by Bosnia's Daily Avaz, and it is expected to start programming soon.
According to the report, the deal is in line with Al Jazeera's intentions to establish a regional TV centre for the Balkans based in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo. The Qatar-based broadcaster is expected to hire over 100 people for its station in Sarajevo, with many of them journalists.
Al Jazeera will take over the radio and television channel from the Sarajevo city government, which acquired it several months ago under a plan to establish a public broadcaster for the city, and with the station facing closure because of financial problems.
Sarajevo's mayor Alija Behmen said Al Jazeera will establish a regional office in Sarajevo and will pay the city some €163,000 (Dh808,397) in compensation for the amount the local government had already invested in the failed broadcaster.

Studio 99 was established as a private radio station in 1992 and gained recognition for promoting the values of multi-ethnicity and multiculturalism during the country's war between 1992 and 1995. It started television broadcasting in 1994.
Over the years it has won support from many international organizations, but with international funding drying up in late 1990s the channel has faced continual financial pressures.
Talks are under way about the possible locations after the network bought the Studio 99. At the same time some of the Al Jazeera content is already being translated into Bosnian for the beginning of the programming in the region.
The Daily Avaz reported that network is looking for at least prominent regional jounralists to hire and boosts its local rating right from the start.
Al Jazeera which launched in Qatar as an Arabic news channel has expanded widely with the launch of Al Jazeera English, Al Jazeera Children Channel, and this latest edition is to be Balkan Al Jazeera, speculations go.

Al Jazeera Balkan soon from Sarajevo Bosnia

joj :D
