Kadare: No casino in the heart of Tirana
Kadare has openly opposed the establishment of casinos in Tirana’s centre. The Albanian writer, distinguished for his liberal tendencies.during dictatorship period, finally declared publicly that he cannot accept the existence of a gambling hotbed in capital’s centre. Because of this, he called the Prime Minister Berisha to exercise all his official authority to cancel previous governmental decision that did not inhibit their opening. The writer, Ismail Kadare, announced lately chairman of honour of “Majft” movement declared “I am aware of Mjaft action and I fully encourage their stand about why the casino should not be opened inside Tirana. Today, Albania is facing a moral crisis that everyone understands. A casino in the middle of Tirana could morally destroy the people.” according to him, in the survey that Mjaft movement conducted, the citizens were expressed against casino’s establishment in Tirana. But Kadare forgot to point out the fact that in the survey conducted by Mjaft on general elections; both main political parties got the same percentage of votes, which shows that Majft surveys are not that trustworthy anymore. However, Kadare stressed “Given the citizens in general are highly important republican institutions that absolutely need to be asked as in any other european country, where, to decide on certain matters, their opinion is essential.” In this context, Kadare addresses an advice to Prime Minister Berisha, where, according to him, Berisha with his authority should cancel opening of this casino, or intervene to transfer it to a more appropriate zone, as it is in european countries, outside big cities, so, in this case, outside Tirana. Regarding the matter, it was expressed also the former Albanian President Ramiz Alia, who opposed as well the opening of casinos in Albania, considering the fact that such games are not relevant for the Albanian reality. “I am against the opening of casinos for the reasons known to anyone,”- he said.
