Albanian Ex-Rebels Warn of Rising Tensions
Tirana, March 10, 2003 - Two Albanians, both former guerilla leaders in Southern Serbia, yesterday warned that violent incidents in the region could worsen unless the international community enforces the region’s peace deal.
The volatile Presevo Valley, which borders U.N-administered Kosovo, has been largely calm since the 2001 Albanian guerilla insurgency, which was ended by a NATO-brokered peace deal, but several incidents over the last month have raised fears of a fresh escalation in violence, reported radio B92.
Speaking in Kosovo’s capital Pristina and making note of the deaths of two Albanian terrorists at the hands of the Serbian police on Friday, Shefket Musliu told Reuters: “All these incidents are not a good sign for the region”.
Musliu also called on the international community to increase its presence in the Presevo Valley and speed-up implementation of the peace deal “before it becomes too late”.

Musliu made his comments in the wake of an announcement by unknown paramilitary group The Albanian National Army, who claimed that the two Albanians killed on Friday were its members and urged all Albanians to join their fight for national liberation.
Jonuz Musliu, another former rebel leader, also warned the west that it has a responsibility for what is happening in the region, as it is failing to push through the peace agreement. “The situation is very tense and it’s getting out of control,” said Musliu, who is now a municipal leader in the central town of Bujanovac.
Meanwhile the so-called Albanian National Army (ANA) today issued a statement on its website that vowed to show no mercy to ethnic Albanians who are serving in Southern Serbia’s, Western-sponsored multi-ethnic police force.
