Macedonian Criticism of Oliver Stone's film Alexander
Stone has Collin Farell (the actor playing Alexander) saying to the Macedonians before the battle of Gaugamela against the Persians that they are fighting for “the glory of Greece.”
Ancient sources do not write that Alexander fought for the “glory of Greece” but for that of Macedonia. Three ancient historians detailed Alexander’s address to the army before the battle. And each one of them made a clear distinction between Macedonians, Greeks, Illyrians, and Thracians, as four separate ethnicities that composed Alexander's army. Here are the words of the Roman historian Curtius Rufus:
“Riding to the front line he (Alexander the Great) named the soldiers and they responded from pot to spot where they were lined up. The Macedonians, who had won so many battles in Europe and set off to invade Asia ... got encouragement from him - he reminded them of their permanent values. They were the world’s liberators and one day they would pass the frontiers set by Hercules and Father Liber. They would subdue all races on Earth. Bactria and India would become Macedonian provinces. Getting closer to the Greeks, he reminded them that those were the people (the Persians on the other side) who provoked war with Greece, ... those were the people that burned their temples and cities ... As the Illyrians and Thracians lived mainly from plunder, he told them to look at the enemy line glittering in gold” (Curt.3.10.4-10)
Notice what Alexander told the Macedonians - “Bactria and India would become Macedonian provinces”. It is for the glory of Macedonia, not for the glory of Greece. The Greeks, are here a second nation of importance to Alexander.
Throughout Oliver Stone’s film there is confusion whether the Macedonians were distinct people or just another Greeks. Ironically the original Synopsis of the film makes the clear distinction between Macedonians and Greeks. There we read: “Alexander led his virtually invincible Greek and Macedonian armies through 22,000 miles…His extraordinary journey begins when Alexander launches his invasion from Macedonia…”
Yet although in the Synopsis the Macedonians are separate from the Greeks, and they left from Macedonia and not from Greece, Stone has them fighting for the “glory of Greece”?! The error is obvious.

Juckt keine Sau was Ex-Jugoslawische Faschisten aus FYROM von dem Film halten. Ist wie mit eurem Geschichtsbild - keine Sau juckt es. Deswegen auch das Disneyland 2.0 um Aufmerksamkeit zu gewinnen - ja, es wurde aufmerksam gelacht.

Gut das du Geschichtsbild erwähnst.

Der Guardian überraschte 2009 mit einem Artikel in dem geschrieben stand, dass bekannte griechische Historiker sich gegen eine Aufstellung einer Alexander Statue in Athen stellen. Als Grund hierfür wurde genannt, dass Alexander der Makedonier als Eroberer nach Athen kam. "Seit 1972 würde die Statue staub fangen" schrieb der Guardian.

Image Debate in Greece, one that was kept secret for several weeks by Greek media, perhaps not to embarass the Government.
Thanks to Athens based British journalist from The Guardian, the secret is out. Several prominent (older) Greek historians have been disobeying Athens and had voted against erecting a monument of Alexander the Great.
Greek politicians led by nationalist euforia have pushed for the sculpture to be placed in the center of Athens for greater exposure. However, a handful of historians and archeologists in Athens, who together form a powerful lobby, were against putting a sculpture of the ancient hero in the capital.
According to the group, "Alexander came to Athens as a conqueror, an enemy". The parallel would be if the Polish decided to erect a statue of Hitler in Warsaw.
More Greek historians are raising their voices and displeasure with the Greek Government who via numerous policies spanning 80 years have replaced their history with scenes from a disney movie, the facts with myths.
While trying to usurp the history of a whole region, Athens historians and archeologists are worried Greece may lose the history that rightfully belongs to them

For a warrior king who had conquered most of the known world by the age of 33, Alexander the Great never flinched when it came to a fight. But even he might have been left powerless by a row in Greece over the location of a statue, carved in his likeness in 1972.
Seventeen years after its acquisition by the Greek culture ministry, the rendition of the military commander has been gathering dust in a basement storeroom because of fierce controversy over where to put the sculpture. Nationalist-minded politicians, on both sides of the spectrum, believe the statue "rightfully" belongs to a prominent square in the heart of ancient Athens. There, they say, the Macedonian king would not only receive maximum viewing but the reverence he deserves from a people who see themselves as his rightful descendants.
Had it not been for archaeologists, that might have happened. But the purveyors of Greece's past - a powerful lobby in this antiquities-rich country - have strongly resisted the move, saying Alexander came to the capital "as a conqueror". The row might have gone unnoticed had it not been for the recently reinvigorated intensity of the name dispute between Athens and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
