Die Heldentat des griechischen Kampfpiloten Marinos Mitralexis:

On November 2, a squadron of 15 Italian bombers, with fighter escorts, headed towards Thessaloniki. Soon they were spotted and intercepted by Greek fighters of the 22nd Squadron. During the dogfights, three of the bombers were shot down, while the rest reached their targets, and then the Italians started to return to their base in Albania. Mitralexis, who had already shot down one bomber, was now out of ammunition, so he aimed the nose of his PZL P. 24 right into an enemy bomber's tail, smashing the rudder and sending the bomber out of control. He then had to make an emergency landing near the crashed bomber. Having landed, Mitralexis arrested the four surviving crew members of the enemy aircraft using his pistol.

For this extraordinary feat, Mitralexis was promoted and awarded a number of medals, including Greece's highest award for bravery, the Gold Cross of Valour. He was the only Air Force officer to be awarded it during the war. When Greece capitulated to Germany (April 1941) he and the rest of the surviving Greek Air Force personnel and aircraft escaped to North Africa to join the Allied forces there.

Legacy:

At the outbreak of the Greek-Italian War on 28 October 1940, the Greek Air Force was severely outnumbered, counting only 79 aircraft against the 380 fighters and bombers available to the ItalianRegia Aeronautica[SUP]. [/SUP]Mitralexis feat boosted Greek morale, being depicted in several artists' impressions, in newspapers and magazines, as well as on a postage stamp. It propelled Mitralexis to the status of a War Hero, eclipsing his subsequent war record of 5 kills.A statue of him is erected in Athens.

Die Aufopfernde Heldentat des griechischen Soldaten Dimitrios Itsios:

Metaxas line was the "Maginot" line of Greece. We talking about 24 bunkers between them the great "Rupel Buncker", with anti-tank poles, wires and other deadly things wich repress the enemy and pull him back.

At 6 April of 1941 the German army deployed all of Metaxas line and started the attack on it, somewhere in the Western point of the line's end, on Greek mount "Beles" there was 2 with 3 Machine gun little bunckers wich have only few men and in the beginning of the 6th April 1941 they defended their positions on the Hill, called in Greek "Beautiful Hill". There were these 3 bunckers, the buncker P7, P9 and P8. The 5th Division of German XVIII Mountain Corps with their Leader General Schörner attacked the "Beautiful Hill". General Schörner ask's the German Heavy Artillery to start firing against the Hill. Simultaneously he's ask from the German Luftwaffe to start Air bombing. In few minutes 4 Stuka plains start droping bombs and firing with their guns at the Greek Bunckers. Inside the Buncker P8 there is a Greek Soldier his Name: Dimitris Itsios. He uses the Machine gun of P8 and firing against the enemy from morning, after the deadly big bombardments from German artillery and Stuka attacking, the men take order to leave the bunckers and move back on the basic Greek defend Line, But Dimitris Itsios see's that his Greek Soldiers are few and without Weapons. Dimitris Itsios decide's to stay alone at the P8 buncker and keep the Germans under fires to rescue his Men so that they can retreat safely. 3 of His men decide to stay with him, while the other Greek soldiers are leaving. Dimitris stays and fires against the Germans with his Machine Gun. For an amazing act he pulls back the German attackers with his machine gun, he fights for another 4 hours and every German attack to the P8 buncker fails.
But then because Dimitrios Itsios is out of Ammuniotion the Machine Gun stops firing. He shoot all of his 38.000 bullets against the Germans. On that Day Dimitrios Itsios killed 238 German soldiers and one German Colonel.

When the German soldiers catch the three Greek soldiers and Dimitris, the German General Schörner came face to face with Itsios and asked him:

Schörner: Who is the Machine-Gunner of this buncker?

Itsios: Me sir

Schörner: You? a simple Soldier? there is none else? any Colonel? Major?

Itsios: No sir only me, and these soldiers..

Schörner:You know Soldier, that you killed all of my Men and one Major? You know that you took down almost all of my Squad?

Itsios: I was just defending my Country sir!

After this Conversation General Schörner tells his Men to salute Itsios, but because Schörner lost so many of his Soldiers he decides to Kill Dimitris Itsios. Schörner salutes him, puts the pistol on Itsios head and kills him.
After these events Itsios is recognised as the modern Leonidas of Greek War history, and the "Beautifull Hill' was from now on the new Thermopylae.
