The Albanian Muslim community formed the Albanian Australian Islamic Society (AAIS) in 1963. The establishment of the AAIS was both a historic and symbolic event for the Albanian Muslim community that migrated to Melbourne because it signified the following:

• The Albanian Muslim community had accepted Australia as their home;
• The AAIS would operate as a centre to preserve the language, tradition, culture and faith of the Albanian Muslim community for future generations.

The AAIS was the first Albanian organisation in the greater city of Melbourne to provide Albanian Muslim families with both community and religious services, such as the first official Albanian language classes in Australia, Islamic classes (in Albanian), social functions and other social events.
Shortly after its formation, the elected AAIS Board, together with the members of the time, began work on a major project to build Melbourne’s first Mosque. To complete this project, the AAIS transformed a large section of its main building to allow for the construction of the ’Albanian Mosque’. This project was successfully completed and the Albanian Mosque was officially established in 1969.
Today, the AAIS continues to serve both the Albanian Muslim community, as well as the broader Muslim community (Um’mah) of Melbourne. It has also become the largest Albanian Muslim organisation in Australia and it comprises of members from all the Albanian ancestral lands i.e. Albania, Kosova, Macedonia, Montenegro and Chameria.

Albanische Moschee in Queensland / Australien

On Saturday 24 April the small, tightly knit, predominantly Albanian Muslim community of Mareeba in Far North Queensland celebrated a historic milestone with the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Mareeba mosque in 1970.

The celebration saw almost 200 local and interstate guests gather at the mosques hall to celebrate the significant occasion. The event not only honours 40 years of Islamic strength and prosperity in the area, it also marks 40 years of continued community harmony.

The town of Mareeba situated approximately 45 minutes from the city of Cairns on the picturesque hinterland of the Atherton tableland is home to approximately 70 Muslim families from a diversity of cultures.

According to some sources, in 1905, Albanian immigrants have opened the first mosque in the U.S. Although this is debatable, it is known that Albanian immigrants have opened the first mosque in the state of Connecticut, the first in New York, and today 13 Albanian mosques are found in North America.

Iftar dinner is followed with religious lectures by Imam Rifat Alili from Skopje, Macedonia, where examples of the prophets are called to serve as models of life in the implementation of the divine project in the life of every individual.
