Deputy Commander of Alliance Supreme Allied Command Europe meets with the MOD and GSAF senior officials
Deputy Commander of Supreme Allied Command Europe, general John Reith met with senior officials of the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces General Staff, in the framework of his visitations tour in the Balkans.
Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu had a special meeting with general Reith and the delegation accompanying him.
Among the main issues discussed were: AAF transformation, defense budget, regional initiatives progress.
Operational capability increase, logistical base modernization and professional soldiers increase in number have been some of the main directions the AF reformation process has taken, during 2006.
During the meeting Minister Fatmir Mediu pointed that the 1st Company of IIIB [Second Infantry Battalion] at the RRB and the EOD group [Logistics Support Command] during exercise “Reaction 06 has concluded successfully, which makes it a very positive achievement.
Preparation of this battalion as a unit capable of being deployed abroad in 2007, is aimed to be achieved within this year.
Signing of agreement with the American company “Lockheed Martin” for the “Integrated System of the Maritime Space Observation” [ISMSO], purchasing of 12 BO 105 helicopters and 4 modern maritime ships, will clearly influence the AF logistic support upgrading.
At the same time, Minister Mediu re-confirmed the Albanian Military engagement for the further participation in NATO-led PSO [Peace Support Operations].
Meanwhile, all preparations are taking place for participation in the “Active Endeavor” Operation in the Mediterranean.
Intensification of A3 member countries cooperation and the successful meeting of the Southeast Europe Defense Ministerial, in Tirana show the important role Albania plays in regional initiatives progress.
Another potential support for reaching the goals regarding military modernization is the increase in the military budget the Albanian Government has foreseen for 2007.

At the same time, he expressed his continuous support in creating a Force that is small in number, but professional and interoperable with NATO.
Afterwards, general Reith met with the Chief of the GSAF, general lieutenant Pellumb Qazimi and Deputy Minister of Defense, Mr. Petrit Karabina.
