The Village
The village of Kosovo is situated in the centre of the Rhodope Mountains, some five km from the Narechenski Bani spa resort. Hills with virgin forests surround it from all sides. Four never failing rivers run through it.
It is easy to reach Kosovo from Asenovgrad (30 km), Pamporovo ski resort (36 km), Plovdiv (50 km), Sofia (197 km), Burgas (282 km).
Settlers from Staro Selo village next to the Biala Cherkva Monastery founded Kosovo in the 17th century. Kosovo reached the peak of its prosperity in the 19 th century. Most of the houses in the village are from that period. The livelihood in those times included stockbreeding, agriculture, trade and masonry. In the 20 th century, the village declined and was totally forsaken.
The typical Bulgarian Renaissance architecture has been conserved in the village of Kosovo. There are 63 cultural monuments in the village, five of them of national importance. Two of those buildings – the Church of the Assumption (1851) and the Hadjiyska House (1853), were made by the famous Hadji Georgi Stanchovski, who had also built the most beautiful houses in Old Plovdiv. Other buildings of great interest are the old school (1889), the chapels of St. Peter and St. Nedelya, the water-mill, the forge, as well as most of the old houses in the village.
The climate in Kosovo is enjoyable all year round. In winter, there are many sunny days with snow. In summer, the dense oak and pine forests ensure fresh nights. The bird songs are unforgettable in spring, just like the colors of the leaves in autumn.
