Can anyone remember the match Malta vs. Croatia during the World Cup qualifier ? (2005)

Numerous seats were pulled up by croatian supporters and hurled towards Malta supporters in the VIP area, one of them hitting a government minister. -,-

Sry Malta :-(
A mate of mine was at that match. Spent all his money getting there from Pula, so in the end he had to blag a place on the Croatian team's flight home from an official of the Croatian FA...

Cuti bre, there are enough threads here already where you poofs can discuss shit in Serbian and whatever. This is where we get to speak English.

That's hardly a drawback, this way there's less interference from notorious peasants who don't know what the fuck they're talking about but want to have their say anyway...

The greatest success of our national team has already been mentioned.
Watch the video. In my eyes it`s the victory against Hungary 2006 but some would argue it`s the 7:1 win against Liechtenstein or
even the World Cup Qualification 1994 which Malta managed not to finish last spot on the expense of Estonia. We have beaten them away 2:0.
Considering Estonia`s progress it`s quite an achievement

On Club level, well I remember a historic victory of
HIBERNIANS vs. Shelbourne FC from Ireland
1st round Qual. Champions League 2002
Hibernians won 3:2 on aggregate

The following season the
SILEMA WANDERERS managed to win agains Skonto Riga from Latvia
1st round Qual. Champions League 2003
in a penalty shootout after 3:3 on aggregate

English and Italian rivalries

As said before, most Maltese people prefer to watch English and Italian leagues. This traces its beginning to the nation's political past, where in the 1930s a hot political issue was the Language Question, i.e. whether Malta had to adopt either Italian or English as an official language. This created pro-British and pro-Italian factions within the Maltese, virtually halving the population in two.[2] This rivalry now remains subtly in the nation's main political parties, but also in football, where as said before Maltese prefer foreign leagues to the Maltese one. During World Cups Maltese generally side with either the English or the Italians. Popular foreign clubs are mainly Man Utd, Liverpool, Juventus, Milan and Inter. Popular national teams are mainly England and Italy, with Brazil in the third place, followed by Germany and the Netherlands to a lesser extent.[3] These foreign fandoms generally divert attention from Maltese football to the detriment of the Maltese leagues and the Malta national football team.

Any explanation why certain segments of society chose to be pro-British or pro-Italian? Was class a factor? Were there regional differences?

As for the last bit, yeah, I always think it's a bit sad when people from small countries focus on big foreign teams from England, Italy or Spain with loads of money and fancy world stars instead of supporting home teams. I mean, why the fuck to you need a ManU or Inter or Barcelona supporters' club in a place like Kosovo, for instance?

I think it`s more a question of descendence than class. Maltese
with an English name regard themselves as English and the ones with
Italian names are italophil. But of course the Italian Maltese are generally also the ones with higher education and better socio economic background.

Before the 1930s, Italian was the official language of Malta. Italian Maltese wanted to promote its use throughout Malta for plans to re-unify it to Italy (Malta was part of the Kingdom of Sicily up to 16th century).

Today, 66% of the Maltese population can speak Italian, and 2% of the population "prefers" to use it in day to day conversation.

Although standard English is official, the variety of English commonly spoken in Malta is heavily influenced by Italian, not only in vocabulary (most commonly by pronouncing English words of Franco-Latin origin in an Italian style) but extending to phonology, with the English being heavily accented.

::lol:

He made it out of Malta but a lot of Croatians got trapped there.

They deserved no mercy after their behaviour, but in the end the FA picked them up. I would leave them on their own after such an incident.

Don't fuck with Malta, you have nowhere to run ;-)

Hehe, yeah, literally nowhere to run unless you bring your own inflatable rubber dinghy along...

True, the FA shouldn't have to bail out a bunch of hooligans that have abused the host nation's hospitality but then again I'm sure not all fans who got stuck in Malta after getting nicked were genuine troublemakers...

My mate for instance might look a lot like the guy in this pic here but I think in the end he's one of the noisy but essentially peaceful types. ;)
