Political Uses of the Past - The Recent Mediterranean Experience, Jacques Revel, Giovanni Levi

Its significance was that Greece had been resurrected after having been successfully subjugated by the Macedonians, the Romans, the Byzantines, and the Turks. The first rector of the University of Athens, Constantine Schinas, referred to the metaphor of an enslaved Greece handed over by the Macedonians to the Romans and then by the Byzantines to the Turks. This was the first official view of Greek history in the aftermath of the war of liberation in 1821.

Nationalism, Globalization and Orthodoxy, Victor Roudometof

Characteristic of this assumption was the intellectuals viewpoint vis-a-vis the place of ancient Macedonians in ancient greek history. During the 1794-1841 period, at least 14 intellectuals (among whom were prominent figures such as Panagiotis Kordikas, Adamntios Korais, Alexandros Soutsos, Georgios Kozakis-Tipaldos, and Iakovos Rizos-Nerulos) expressed the opinion that the ancient Macedonians were not part of the ancient Greek world (Politis 1993, 40-2; Dimitrakopoulos 1996). The Macedonians were considered conquerors of ancient Greece, the first of series of invaders that kept the region under their rule for more than two millennia.

The Making of Modern Greece, Roderick Beatton, David Ricks

For in his earlier works, Paparrigopoulos had essentially distinguished between the history of the Byzantine state and the history od medieval Greece; he had than considered ancient Macedonians as a more or less distinct nation - because as he wrote in his Textbook of General History in 1849, the Macedonian nation accomplished, in the general history [of civilization], a different mission form that of the the Hellenic nation (Paparrigopoulos 1849-53, 1.193); and, inevitably, he had tended to focus on the history od the ancient and modern Greeks.

In my opinion, the answer is: two main sources of inspiration, Droysen and Zambelios, as well as a more refined understanding and use of the theoretical principles of German historicism by Paparrigopoulos himself. Johan Gustav Droysen, ..., offered him weighty arguments regarding the Greek identity of the ancient Macedonians, and the spread of Hellenic civilization eastwards. He also offered im one of the key concepts of the newly born Greek national historical school; the concept of Hellenism. Although Droysen himself restricted its use to the Hellenic World, he and his disciples, such as Otto Abel (1824-1854), understood Hellenism in the sense of Hellenic genius, which had a historical trajectory of its own. In fact, what Paparrigopoulos and other Greek national historians such as Zameblios had to do after having read Droysen was to generalize the use of the concept so as to apply it to the whole Greek history and, at another level, to identify it with the concept of Greek nation. The final result of this double intellectual process was the production of a series of terms and concepts well known to all contemporary Hellenists: Ancient Hellenism, Macedonian Hellenism, byzantine Hellenism, Modern Hellenism, and so forth.

Seite 182

Korais saw the period of Turkish rule as simply the lowest point in the downward path that the nation had followed ever since Greece had been conquered by the Macedonian king Phillip II in the second half of the fourth century BCE.

This is about a nation that has suffered deeply, a nation the world has forgotten about. The Macedoian nation has been robbed of its history, traditions, culture, identity, land and so on. Everything the athenians, the "bulgarians", the serbs and the "albanians" are writing is really Macedonian. We Macedonians have suffered enough. We want to to show the world our struggle for for justice. The media of the western world has never showed the truth about Macedonia, only "propaganda news". The Macedonian nation does not accept being occupied. 3,2 million Macedonians live in the Pirin part of Macedonia and in towns outside, in 'Bulgaria'.The Western World's fascists, Nazis, bureaucrats and fanatics support and help 'Bulgarian' Sevonists to violate and discriminate the Macedonian nation.'Bulgarian' Sevonists have imprisoned and tortured many, many Macedonians. Only one single case has been brought up to the European Court in Strasbourg.I am mot going to bring this up right know. These 86 years when 'Bulgarian' Sevonists have slaughtered and murdered Macedonians, thrown out Macedonians and taken over their homes and land, performed ethnical cleansing against the Macedonians. All these things will be brought up when you have left Macedonian territoryTo the AthenianThe Macedonian nation can no longer cope with these violations and terror. Macedonians are being abused, imprisoned, our rights have been taken from us. For 85 years you have changed everything. You have changed the names of Macedonian towns and areas and the family names of the Macedonians. You have changed our traditions and nationalities. All Athenians are to leave Macedonian territory, immediately. The houses and land you have stolen from the Macedonians are to be returned to the rightfully owners. You can live and support yourselves in your own country. The Macedonian nation will never forget or forgive the Athenians for what they have done to the Macedonian nation. They have murdered and slaughtered Macedonians. They have burnt down the houses of the Macedonians. They have tried to exterminate the whole Macedonian nation. This time the West Fascist and Nazi world will not be able to help you. This is the only way for us to make our voices heard and to inform the world. Alo "atina", "sofija", "belgrad" i "tirana" ovde MAKEDONIJA! Hallo "athens", "sofija", "belgrad" and "tirana" here is MACEDONIA! MAKEDONIJA NA MAKEDONCITE! MACEDONIA FOR THE MACEDONIANS!

Aus dem Werk "By the Spear: Philip II, Alexander the Great, and the Rise and Fall of the Macedonian Empire" (Mit dem Speer: Philipp II., Alexander der Große und Aufstieg und Fall des makedonischen Reiches) picken wir uns ein Zitat heraus.

Ian Worthington (* 19.

Englisch:
Culture, therefore, had nothing to do with being "barbarian". What Greeks meant by the term was someone who did not speak Greek. Twice during his reign Alexander was said to speak in Macedonian, the first time at the trial of his general Philotas in 330 and the second time in verbal fight with Cleitus in 328. Thus, the Macedonians may have been Slavic, who came into contact with Greeks and embraced their culture.

Deutsch:
