EX-YU aviation news: B&H considering Skopje comeback
A source at B&H Airlines has confirmed to EX-YU aviation news that the Bosnian carrier is considering resuming flights to the Macedonian capital Skopje. Services to the city would be launched midway through the winter season, close to the New Year holiday period. The arrival of B&H’s second ATR 72 has given the airline more space to manoeuvre and plan for new routes. Ticket sales for the new service would begin well in advance and there will be a focus on marketing in an attempt to familiarise potential passengers with the new route.

Earlier in the year, before Turkish Airlines withdrew from its stake in B&H Airlines, the carrier announced plans to launch flights to Skopje. Five weekly flights were meant to be inaugurated at the start of the 2012 summer season. Plans were made for the service to depart Sarajevo in the evening with the return flight to leave Skopje early next morning, so as to connect onto B&H’s services to Europe. B&H has previously flown to the Macedonian capital via Podgorica. However, the national carrier suspended the flights citing low interest.

While the flights are still not set in stone, B&H’s return will be welcomed news for Skopje Airport which is already anticipating a busy winter season. If B&H resumes services to Skopje, the city will be served by four national carriers of the former Yugoslavia - Adria Airways, B&H Airlines, Croatia Airlines and Jat Airways. All of the EX-YU airlines rely on Macedonian transit passengers to Western Europe, with B&H now ready to enter the game as well.

[h=1]flydubai adds cargo flights to Romania and Macedonia[/h]Posted on September 20, 2012 by Kforsythe
In October, flydubai Cargo will begin direct flights from its home base in Dubai to Bucharest, Romania, and Skopje, Macedonia. According to a company press release, these flights — which will commence on October 1 and October 18, respectively — are the first direct links by a cargo operator between Dubai and each destination.
In addition to expanding its direct flights, the carrier has been busy forming interline agreements during its first year of existence. In the past 10 months, flydubai Cargo has entered into partnerships with Emirates, British Airways, Estonia Air, Coyne Airways and Jet Airways; the carrier has been focusing on spreading its network beyond the Middle East.
“Through these interline agreements we have opened new routes and thus new avenues for trade,” Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of flydubai, said in a statement. “We are now able to deliver goods from Sudan to Sydney and also provide Nepal’s handicraft industry with access to consumers in the U.S., Europe and Australia.”
Flydubai Cargo has mostly been transporting meat, fruits and vegetables to the Indian subcontinent and the CIS. The carrier also flies a lot of live fish to Sudan.
“The wide range of products being transported by flydubai Cargo shows the demand for a timely, affordable and reliable service,” he said. “Less than a year into operations, we have grown our network as well as our customer base and aim to continue serving a global audience as our range and operations expand.”

flydubai’s inaugural flight between Dubai and Skopje, the capital of the Republic of Macedonia, touched down today, marking the innovative low-cost airline’s 15[SUP]th[/SUP] passenger route in Central & Eastern Europe.
Flight, FZ791, departed Dubai Terminal 2 at 0915hrs today, landing at Skopje Alexander the GreatAirport at 1240hrs local time where flydubai’s Chief Executive Officer, Ghaith Al Ghaith, was greeted by Deputy Prime Ministers Vladimir Peshervski and Zoran Stavreski, the Minister for Transport and Communication, Mile Janakieski, the Minister for Economy, Valon Caracini, the Minister for Interior, Gordana Jankulovska and the Chief Operating Officer of TAV Holding, Murat Ornekol. Following a water canon salute on touchdown, Al Ghaith participated in a traditional bread and salt reception before the delegation hosted a press conference at the airport terminal.
flydubai’s CEO, Ghaith Al Ghaith, said: “More than 40 per cent of our route development this year has taken place in Central & Eastern Europe and with the addition of Skopje, we are connecting the UAE to another underserved market. This illustrates our commitment to this region, while also opening up opportunities for cooperation and collaboration with different nations.”
According to the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Trade, the volume of goods traded between the UAE and Macedonia increased by 80% in 2011 compared to the previous year, with textiles among its most in demand industries.
Mile Janakieski, Minister for Transport and Communication of the Republic of Macedonia, stated: “Low-cost airlines such as flydubai offer passengers affordable travel options and the regions in which they operate often experience rapid economic development. The inclusion of Skopje as a destination into flydubai’s network has great significance as these flights will not only connect Skopje to Dubai, but indirectly to more than 50 destinations around the world where the airline operates and beyond.”
According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the total contribution of travel and tourism to Macedonia’s GDP is expected to rise by 5% a year over the next 10 years. Tourists are attracted to Macedonia’s history, rich culture and sights including the 1,500-year-old Kale Fortress in Skopje and OhridLake in the south west of the country.
“The launch of flights between Skopje and Dubai will have a positive effect on the Macedonian diaspora living in Australia. The time on board and number of connecting flights to different airports will dramatically decrease and Macedonians living in Australia will be able to arrive in Skopje faster and easier. With this launch Macedonian citizens and those of neighbouring countries will be able to fly directly to the UAE from Skopje’s Alexander the Great Airport,” said Murat Ornekol, Chief Operating Officer of TAV Holding, the company that manages Macedonian airports.
Skopje is the second addition to flydubai’s CIS and Central & Eastern European network this month, following the start of flights to Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, on 1 October 2012. The airline now serves 15 destinations including: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and from today, the Republic of Macedonia.

Macedonia's Alexander The Great Airport records impressive growth

Skopje Alexander the Great Airport handled 62.371 passengers in November, an increase of 11% compared to last year’s 56.180. A total of 60.873 passengers were registered on scheduled flights, compared to 50.089 in November 2011 or an increase of 21.5%. The strong results were achieved due in part to Wizz Air, which opened a base in the Macedonian capital in late October. In November, the no frills carrier welcomed 15.565 passengers on its six newly launched routes from Skopje.
The strong passenger growth comes on the back of a lacklustre October when numbers plummeted by 9%. With strong growth and the prospect of a further Wizz Air expansion next year, Skopje Alexander the Great Airport is likely to come close to handling one million passengers by the end of 2013, the first time in thirteen years. The airport welcomed a record 1.000.200 passengers in 2000. However, this impressive figure had more to do with the political turmoil in the region rather than natural growth. In 2011, Skopje welcomed 759.928 passengers through its doors, its best result since 2000.
Meanwhile, the Swiss based Darwin Airline has announced it will be launching flights from Zurich and Geneva to Priština from December 14. Flights from Zurich will operate on a daily basis while services from Geneva will run twice per week. A Belle Air Airbus A319 will be used for the abovementioned flights. The airline will also launch services from Zurich and Geneva to Niš Constantine the Great Airport next week. Originally, flights were to be inaugurated tomorrow, however, the service launch has now been moved to December 15. According to the airline, the first several flights have already been sold out. The airline will operate services from Zurich and Geneva to Niš on its fifty seat Saab 2000 aircraft until January 20.

Schon geil, wenn man Freitag hin fliegt und Montag zurück. Mal so übers Wochenende in MK. Erstaunlicherweise sind die Flieger gut ausgelastet.
