Sturrigde + 27 Millionen = Modric?

Spurs: Would you accept £27m plus Sturridge for Modric?

The Luka Modric transfer story rumbles on and now the Daily Star on Sunday claims Roman Abramovich is prepared to pay £27 million plus promising young striker Daniel Sturridge. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy insists that the creative Croatian is not for sale at any price, but if you were in his shoes would this latest development change your stance?

With Gareth Bale, Rafael Van der Vaart, Luka Modric and Aaron Lennon in the squad, Harry Redknapp has four potential match winners at his disposal, but it’s obvious that Spurs need new blood at the Lane. Last season, despite their Champions League heroics, Tottenham just didn’t have enough in the tank to hold off the threat of Manchester City and ultimately fell out of the top four. Jermain Defoe had a shocker in front of goal while Peter Crouch, although a great link up man for Van der Vaart, is not an out-and-out striker, Robbie Keane has passed his best and Roman Pavlyuchenko still lacks consistency. That’s where Daniel Sturridge comes in.

The Chelsea hitman is a prolific striker and a future England international. Sturridge has blinding pace, bags of skill and is lethal in front of goal. You only have to see what he achieved in his loan spell at Bolton to appreciate him as a player and I think he would fit in well at Spurs. He’s not afraid to put his head in where it hurts and is equally effective outside the box as he is inside.

Chelsea snapped up the promising Sturridge from Manchester City in 2009, but his dream move to the capital hasn’t exactly gone to plan. He has scored just once for the Blues in 26 appearances. However, he showed everyone during his time at Bolton that if you give him game time he will score goals. Eight goals in 12 appearances is an awesome record and it’s no wonder he is highly sought after.

As for Modric, no-one is bigger than the club. Yes he is an awesome talent and was player of the season last year but there’s no point hanging on to someone who doesn’t want to be with you. Would you beg your partner to stay with you if she publicly stated that she wanted to shack up with John Terry? No, you wouldn’t. It would look pathetic.

Of course no-one wants to lose their best players to their main rivals, especially as it will improve their squad and hit yours. But is there any real logic in keeping someone who doesn’t want to be there?

Spurs, quite rightly, are holding out for as much money as possible. They value Modric at about £40 million and Spurs hold all the cards. They will let him go at the right price. However, in this deal they are not only getting money to rebuild the squad, they are also getting a top, top striker. Harry could use part of that £27 million to Scott Parker in from West Ham and in Niko Kranjcar they have an already made replacement for Modric. He’s creative, crafty and intelligent. Given more game time, the Croatian international could easily fill the shoes of his countryman. They will still have money to spend to strengthen other areas of the team.

But the big question is; would you let Modric leave for £27 million plus Daniel Sturridge or make him see out his contract? Or would you try and squeeze as much money out of Chelsea as possible?
