Holders Italy have been paired with Hungary in today's draw in Switzerland for the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying play-offs.
Home advantage
As Group 5 winners, Claudio Gentile's side will play the second leg of their tie against Hungary - who finished as runners-up in Group 8 - at home. All eight play-off ties for next year's final tournament will take place on 12 and 16 November.
Footballing neighbours
Elsewhere, England will face France, while the losing finalists in the 2004 edition of the competition - Serbia and Montenegro - take on neighbours Croatia. Meanwhile, Ukraine's hopes of progress will be tested by Group 7 winners Belgium.
Czech examination
Another European 'derby' will see Germany - who hosted the 2004 finals - tackle the Czech Republic, U21 champions in 2002, while in the remaining fixtures, Russia play Denmark, Slovenia meet the Netherlands, and Switzerland face Portugal.
Final tournament
The eight winners will advance to next summer's final round, which will be held between 25 May and 6 June, and hosted by one of the finalists.
