Kosovo Montenegrins recognized as separate group Tuesday, 23 December 2008
Kosovo Montenegrins have been officially included in the Consultation-Advising Council of Ethnic Communities, which was established under the patronage of the Republic of Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu to better serve the needs of ethnic minorities in Kosovo.
This decision acknowledges the separate identity of Montenegrin community in Kosovo.
President of the Association of Kosovo Montenegrins, Slobodan Vujicic, said that President Sejdiu named Manojlo Vukotic representative of the Montenegrin community in Kosovo to the Consultation-Advising Council of Ethnic Communities.
Montenegrins were e separate ethnicity under Tito's Yugoslavia however with the rise of Serb nationalism their separate identity was denied.
Like Serbs, local Kosovo Montenegrins were active participants in the decade-long Belgrade campaign of repression in Kosovo. In recent years, inspired by the movement in Montenegro to distance itself from Serbia, Kosovo Montenegrins have complained that they are mistakenly being associated with Kosovo Serbs.
Montenegro declared independence in 2006 although Montenegrins are closer to Serbs in language and religion than most other people of ex-Yugoslavia. Slobodan Milosevic was born to Montenegrin parents.
Montenegro has recognized Kosovo independence and the relations between the two governments are good.
