Washington, 10 March 2012 (MIA) - Those who would attack children, students, really are the greatest kinds of cowards, US Deputy Assistant Secretary Philip Reeker has said at a press briefing on the situation in the Balkans at the Washington Foreign Press Center.
"We would call on all parties to remain calm in this. What needs to be done is deal with this under law. It’s a law enforcement action. They need to find out what happened, get the facts of the case, make them known, and allow a legal process to take its course," the former US ambassador to Macedonia stated when asked to comment the recent violent incidents in Skopje which are increasing inter-ethnic tensions, Voice of America's Macedonian service reported in Friday evening.
He noted that the Balkans remained a priority of the US administration, adding that Euro-Atlantic integration was the way to stability and prosperity.
Asked whether the US and other NATO allies would exert pressure on Greece to agree Macedonia to join NATO under its reference name before the NATO summit in Chicago, Reeker reiterated that the name issue had to be solved.
"We very much want to see Macedonia as a full member of the NATO alliance. And in that respect, we, and I think all of our allies, would like to see, as soon as possible, a resolution of the name issue with Greece," the US diplomat said.
Philip Reeker commended the recent meeting between the premiers of Macedonia and Greece, urging further engagements to be made and the UN-sponsored talks to move forward. He said Washington had said a long time ago that a solution to the dispute was possible, which would be in the interest not only of the people of Macedonia and Greece, but also of the region.
