His mom was an Epirot-Illyrian (Albanian) and on his dad's side, Pelasgian (Ancient Macedonian, not Bulgarian-Macedonian, and not Greek).
I anticipate Greeks answering back to say Epirots, Illyrians and Pelasgians are Greek, so I would like to state in advance that:
1. Homer himself said that Pelasgians predate the Greeks,
2. Persians called Macedonians: Greeks with hats (to signify a difference),
3. Epirots along with the Macedonians were called barbarians (to signify that they were not Greek),
4. Greeks didn't want king Alexander I to participate in the Olympics because his "Greekness" was debated.
You cannot argue with the first-hand citations to say that it is similar to today's politicians calling each other names.
In the first link below, you'll see the reference of the ancient name "Chaonians," which closely relates to the "Cham" Albanians in Greece and Chameria is A NAME ONLY USED BY ALBANIANS. The Greek dance "Tsamiko" comes from this name, I guess to mean "Albanian Style."
