Milos took KLA bullets and Nato bombs. Now he wants to be alone

Milos, 28, was a private in a mortar platoon of 39 Serb reservists. Twenty-six died, 13 survived. These people in this Belgrade cafe, checking timetables, sipping espressos, gossiping, will never comprehend the horror of Kosovo, he says, fidgeting with a plastic orange lighter.At the end of his eight-hour bus ride to the town of Sjenica in south-west Serbia will be a young wife, 14-month-old son and a clerical job in the post office. He does not know how he will cope.
'I'm not the same, I'm not right here,' he says, tapping his domed forehead. The grey eyes wander when he talks. Words come slowly. Without realising it, he twists the yellow tablecloth into a knot.

'We went to exterminate the terrorists wherever we could find them. That was our job. In the beginning it was OK, we pushed them back. It was cold and I wanted a sleeping bag instead of a blanket, but we had enough to eat.'

February turned to March, however, and talk turned to Nato. At around 9pm on 29 March an officer dropped into his trench and said warplanes were on their way to bomb them. 'I was very afraid. I read this, over and over.' Milos pulls out a dog-eared page of a school copybook with an Orthodox Serb prayer written in neat blue handwriting, his wife's.

Explosions lit up the countryside. No one died, not that night. But the planes came back, every night, then during the day too.'They knew everything about us. There wasn't anything they didn't know. If we lit a cigarette they could see it. God knows what they were dropping on us, all sorts of bombs. We didn't expect that intensity. We couldn't fight planes with mortars. And our anti-aircraft guys couldn't do anything.'

Every day the platoon tried to run, to hide. 'It felt like we went over every inch of Kosovo.' Serb civilians stopped bringing them water and food. Ammunition kept arriving. 'But not food. Sometimes we went two or three days without supplies, then it would arrive and it wouldn't feed a cat.'

Milos - not his real name because he says the military police would arrest him for contradicting the official version - closes his eyes when asked about casualties.
'The terrorists killed 175 soldiers in one day in Kosare (on the Albanian border). The government won't admit how many died. It was thousands.' In Milos's platoon, Nato killed 14, the KLA killed 11, and one committed suicide.

Officers were able to warn troops minutes before almost every air attack, but it was of little use. 'We spread out, one of us every hundred metres, but they just picked us off. Bosnia was a spa compared to Kosovo. Everywhere there was a smell of bodies. Rotting bodies.'

His commander, a 24-year-old from Gornji Milanovac with a wife and two baby daughters, was smashed by a grenade. 'We were picking up bits of his leg, bits of his brain. And this was my friend, my brother, we felt like we had known each other for a hundred years.'
A flesh wound put Milos in Kosovska Mitrovica military hospital for four days. 'I've lost so many friends. For what? For Milosevic to betray us? He sold out Kosovo. He's a traitor.'

The KLA grew ever deadlier but the platoon fought on, 'for the soul of Serbia, for our country'. Did he kill anyone? A long pause, then for the first time a smile. 'Yes, yes I did. With my AK-47 I shot some enemies, I could see them falling.' How did it feel? 'I felt better than they did.' The smile widens.
No Albanian civilians were killed by his platoon, he says. 'We didn't even see them, they were all gone.'

But all the time was another fear of what was happening back home. 'We had no contact with our families. The officers told us nothing about Nato attacking Serbia, we never expected that, we thought it was just Kosovo.'

They wanted to fight on, he swears, to the last man. But the day came when an officer dropped into his trench with news of a peace deal. They respected the ceasefire but the Albanians didn't, firing on surviving soldiers as they rolled towards Serbia.

So yesterday he sat in a grotty cafe waiting for a bus. He should have arrived home late last night. 'I'm going to the woods, where everything is absolutely calm. I'm going to spend 10 days there, thinking of nothing, alone. I want to be alone.'

Einer der besten Artikel die ich je in meinem Leben gelesen habe.
Das zeigt wie verlogen die Politik von Milosevic war, wie er sein Volk betrogen hat, es im Gedanken gelassen hat, Kosovo könne man sofort einnehmen und die "Terroristen" sind sofort weg. Dieser Artikel zeigt, das die jugoslawische Armee systematisch gesäubert hat und das Ziel verfolgte, Kosovo frei von Albanern zu machen.
Er beteuerte, Kosovo sei die Wiege der serb. Nation, eine große Lüge, die wegen seiner Propaganda auch heute noch in den Köpfen vieler Serben fest verankert ist und durch solche Extremisten auch jegliche Art von Fortschritt am Balkan verhindert wird.

Die albanische Armee hätte ruhig ein wenig angriffslustiger sein können nach dieser Provokation der serbischen Armee und ganz in den Kosovo eindrigen können

Naja, Panzer hätten sie uns nicht geben können...NATO und so.... aber schwere Artilerie haben wir genügend bekommen, deswegen auch die leichte Einnahme von Koshare an der Grenze. Die Serben sind wie Mäuse geflohen und haben ganze Kasernen mit voller Munition zurück gelassen.

Das sind einfache Dorfleute, die vielleicht noch nie geschossen haben. Hast du jemals geschossen? Ich glaube nicht und deswegen wärst du auch wie ein Huhn gerannt. Falls du mir nun die Gegenfrage stellen möchtest: Ja ich habe geschossen und ja ich besitze ein Sturmgewehr.

Weiter ist es teilweise nur Show vor der Kamera oder um mit Schüssen den Feind auf Distanz zu halten.

Weiss nicht welcher Sonderschüler diese lächerliche Website betreibt, nur ist es angesichts des Militärbudget Albaniens nie und nimmer möglich, dass man Waffen für 200Mio., vor allem aus Serbien kauft. Und dann noch von "Waffenhändlern". In der Gazeta Express (die ja als Quelle genommen wird) lässt sich nichts finden.

Mit solchen Links macht sich niemand ausser du selbst lächerlich.

Das waren einfache Dorfbewohner, die die serbischr Armee in Schach gehalten haben, bis die albanische Armee ausgerückt ist. Es war überhaupt mutig, dass einfache Bauern sich einer Übermacht gestellet haben.

Waffen im Wert von 200 Mio Euro bei einem jährlichen Militärbudget von ingesamt 197,5 Mio? Das ist doch mehr als lächerlich. Mit was soll dann die Armee noch in Stand gehalten werden, wenn alles für Waffen ausgegeben wird? Ausserdem hat Albanien einen Überschuß an Waffen aus eigener und Sowjetischer und Chnisicher Produktion. Schon seit Jahren baut man Waffen ab und man hat immer noch nicht einmal die Hälfte zerstören können. Deine Quelle ist Unfug.
