US begins SDB operational testing

Two months after development flight testing ended, the US Air Force recently began operational testing of the Boeing Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) with a series of tests at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

Boeing says it completed SDB development flight testing on 25 September "on schedule and on cost." During the development programme, 35 SDBs were successfully tested against a variety of fixed targets, each hitting within an average of four feet from its surveyed target aimpoint.

Iraqi coalition member countries convene in Albania to discuss future demands

TIRANA, Albania - November 29, 2005 - Senior military officials of 34 countries whose troops serve in the Iraqi coalition met in Albania on Tuesday to discuss future planning for the operation, the Albanian Defense Ministry said.

The two-day conference, organized by the U.S. Central Command, is part of regular meetings of the coalition military representatives on the status of the operation, and gives them a chance to exchange information and consider future plans, the ministry said.

Gen. George W. Casey, Jr., the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said future challenges for the coalition in Iraq were political and economic development, the continued building of Iraqi security forces and institutions, "and the defeat of (the) insurgency of the foreign fighters that are attempting to establish a base in Iraq."

"The challenges are not small, but it is the willingness and the will of the Iraqi people supported by the coalition that will allow us to continue to go forward," Casey said at a briefing after meeting with Albanian President Alfred Moisiu.

Also taking part was Gen. John Abizaid, chief of U.S. Central Command, who said the command continuously considered the level of the forces in Iraq but that there was no plan for complete withdrawal.

"There are certainly considerations that we make with regard to the levels of forces. But as far as a complete plan for withdrawal, no, we don't have a complete plan for withdrawal," said Abizaid.

Abizaid said there was "good progress on the broad war against terrorists."

"But we also know that an important war like this requires an international coalition and Gen. Casey and I are here to make that coalition work militarily," he said.

Both commanders thanked Albania for its contribution to the coalitions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Albania has a 120-troop army contingent in Iraq under U.S.-led command serve in a non-combat role, mainly patrolling the airport in the Iraqi city of Mosul. It also has a small contingent in Afghanistan and is part of a medical team with Croatia and Macedonia there.

A predominantly Muslim country, Albania strongly backed the U.S.-led war in Iraq. Although it was unable to provide significant military support, it opened its airspace and offered U.S.-led forces the use of its bases.

Der Helm ist voll krass, wie ne billige Theater Truppe! War ne Idee von Fatosi, wo er wohl wieder mal zuviel getrunken hat.

Albania continues military contribution in Iraq

A sixth, 120-strong contingent from Albania was seen off Sunday as they prepared to join coalition forces in Mosul. Praising their mission as a noble one, Defence Minister Fatmir Mediu reminded them of their contribution to global security.

A sixth Albanian army contingent bound for duty in Iraq was seen off Sunday (9 October) during a departure ceremony at a command centre north of Tirana. Addressing the peacekeepers, Defence Minister Fatmir Mediu assured them their mission is a noble one.

"The important aspect of your mission consists of your priority: to contribute to the security of the peace in the world," Mediu said.

Composed of 120 specially trained officers, non-commissioned officers, and professional soldiers, the new contingent will replace the fifth one, which is part of the US-led coalition forces in Mosul, northern Iraq. Albania sent the first contingent to Iraq in April 2003 and has rotated it every six months since then.
