BELGRADE -- Friday – Serbia-Montenegro Military Chief-of-Staff Ljubisa Jokic said that the material situation of the military is still very poor.

Jokic said that this financial crisis affects the military’s readiness and logistical support, adding that some of the problems are the large debt of Jugopetrol and the lack of fuel supplies, and the fact that the military does not have money to replace its old vehicles with new modern ones. He also added that debts for communal services such as water and electricity have also piled up and may be shut down soon.

“Jugopetrol has stopped delivering fuel derivatives because of its 560 million dinar debt…Transport services are complicated because of the fact that the average age of military vehicles is over 25 years. There are more and more announcements that electricity and communal service will be cut as well because of irregular payments.” Jokic said.

The Serbian Government stated that it was not aware of the problems the military is facing with obtaining fuel, but will look into it and react as quickly as possible.
