The new Long Term Program for the Procurement of Defence Material for the period 2011 to 2025 (which includes 31 programs of the military staffs), puts an end to the relatively recent public debate between former Admirals of the Fleet on the issue of procurement of new large surface vessels for the future needs of the Navy.
According to the magazine “Εlliniki Amyna & Technologia”, this document which at present has not yet received the approval of legislators, allocates 2.1 billion Euros for the expenditure of the construction of new frigates. The previous version of the document was referring to 2.6 billion Euros for the same program.
It is unknown however whether the Greek side is still oriented to a possible construction of class FREMM frigates. The current government, through statements of officials, seems that is no longer positive on the perspective of building class FREMM frigates. On a purely theoretical level, the relative funds are sufficient for the construction of three vessels of the type, taking into account elements of the international literature on the cost of construction of similar vessels for other clients. The allocation of 2.1 billion is sufficient however for the construction of four vessels with a similar configuration, but definitely of another type of vessel.
