Northrop Grumman to Provide Hellenic Air Force F-16 Fleet with Advanced Capability Fire Control Radar System

(Source: Northrop Grumman Corp.; issued March 2, 2006)

BALTIMORE --- Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded a $63.9 million contract to provide AN/APG-68(V)9 airborne radars for F-16 Block 52+ aircraft for the Hellenic Air Force.

Northrop Grumman has a direct contract with the United States Air Force for this procurement, which is being managed by the Air Force Materiel Command, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Delivery of the first of 33 radar systems, which includes three spares, will commence in 2007. The contract also includes an option to provide radars for an additional 10 aircraft.

The AN/APG-68(V)9 radar is an advanced capability system that seven foreign countries have purchased as standard equipment on new F-16s or as upgrade kits for their existing F-16 fleets. To date, Northrop Grumman has delivered more than 250 AN/APG-68(V)9 radars.

“This system delivers greatly improved operational capability -- essentially providing for all-weather, day and night, air-to-ground attack,'' said Katie A. Gray, vice president of F-16 sensor systems at Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector. “The Hellenic Air Force was one of the first customers for this system, and this is their second major order for the AN/APG-68(V)9 radar. They have been operating Block 52+ F-16s for three years and have developed enhanced mission profiles that are enabled by the improved performance of the radar.''

The AN/APG-68(V)9 additionally offers a 33 percent increase in air-to-air detection range over earlier versions of the radar and introduces synthetic aperture radar, which provides high-resolution ground mapping. When combined with other weapon-system improvements, it enables F-16s with autonomous 24-hour, all-weather precision-strike capability. The AN/APG-68(V)9 is also available as an easily-installed upgrade kit for existing F-16 aircraft.

Northrop Grumman is a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of defense and commercial electronic systems, including airborne radars, navigation systems, electronic countermeasures, precision weapons, airspace management systems, communications systems and government systems.

Northrop Grumman Corporation is a global defense company headquartered in Los Angeles, Calif. Northrop Grumman provides technologically advanced, innovative products, services and solutions in systems integration, defense electronics, information technology, advanced aircraft, shipbuilding and space technology. With approximately 125,000 employees and operations in all 50 states and 25 countries, Northrop Grumman serves U.S. and international military, government and commercial customers.

Hellenic Coast Guard - OEA

Hellenic Coast Guard - MYA

Hellenic Coast Guard has 2 kinds of Special Units. First one is THE SF unit and it's called MYA/ΛΣ(Monada Ipovrichion Apostolon/ Limeniko Soma) which translates into Underwater Missions Unit/Coast Guard. These unit in wartime is under the command of the Hellenic Navy's DYK and all of it's members are OYK qualified and most are ex Navy OYKs. It handles primarily CT missions aboard ships or coastal instalations.
The other units are more "elite" than special and are regional detechments called OEA(Omades Idikon Apostolon) which translates into Special Missions Units. Their missions are armed response in dangerus situations mainly.
I will try to upload some photos.

Einige Informationen zum Emblem der hellenischen Armee:

The emblem of the Hellenic Army General Staff (HAGS)

[align=justify:d67ded482f]
- The Hellenic inscription on it, «ELEFTHERON TO EFPSICHON», means «freedom requires bravery». It is an extract from a speech given by Pericles - the leader of the Athenian Democracy, the first democracy in the world- in 431 bc, on the occasion of a public funeral for those killed in action during the first campaign of the Peloponnesian War. It expresses our ancestors’ conviction, which remains unchanged to date, on how nations should defend freedom which is the ultimate human good.

- The twin-headed eagle depicts the continuation of the Hellenic and Christian ideals, which inspired the Byzantine army during its struggles to preserve freedom.

- The modern Hellenic Army, the continuation of the Hellenic Revolutionary Forces, the Freedom Fighters against the Ottoman Yoke since 1821, was organized in tactical units, immediately after the establishment of the independent Hellenic State, in the 3rd decade of the 19th century.

- Today, Hellas (Greece) disposes an optimally organized, completely trained, fully equipped and combat effective army, a guarantee of its freedom, independence and territorial integrity, while, in parallel, it is capable to entirely accomplish its obligations in the framework of the alliance.
