es gibt viele theorien was das wort ''hellenen'', ''elines'', ''hellen''. etc. bedeutet.

eines davon ist ein stamm aus griechenland. die sich so nannten. und irgendwie später dieser name übernohmen wurde für das griechischsprechende gebiete wo hellenen lebten.

alle menschen die diese sprache sprachen, die kultur auslebten wurden als hellenen bezeichnet. alles was nicht hellenisch war waren barabaren. das wort barbaren war damals nicht im negativen sinne wie heute. damals nannte man die menschen barbaren die man sprachlich nicht verstanden hat.


in der ''mythologia'' gibt es eine andere sage..

das die hellenen, nicht aus dieser erde stammten...helios zog mit seinen waagen durch den himmel.. und brachte die ersten hellenen auf der erde.

seine 3 töchter (die 3 eliaden) haben sich heimlich den waagen des vaters helios genommen und sind auf der erde abgestürzt, dabei wurde der bruder phaeton tötlich verunglückt. aus strafe dafür wurden die töchter auf der erde verbannt und als bäume umgewandelt.
