Macedonia and NATO Sign Agreement for Expanded Cooperation
14:13 GMT, April 30, 2012 On Friday, at the NATO HQ in Brussels, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Macedonia, Petar Esmerov, signed with an exchange of letters the Agreement between the Ministry of Defence and the NATO Consultations, Command and Control Agency for regarding the cooperation in the areas of consultations, command, control, communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
The signing of the Agreement is the result of the efforts of the Republic of Macedonia in the spirit of our preparations for membership and it constitutes yet another example of the permanent intensification ad expansion of our cooperation with the Alliance. The Republic of Macedonia is the first partner country from the Region to sign such agreement with this NATO Agency, which has brought us to the club of the other partner and EU member countries, such as Sweden and Finland. This agreement helps broaden the road and advance the level of interoperability between the Army of the Republic of Macedonia and NATO.
Today’s activity is the beginning of the further expanded cooperation between the Republic of Macedonia and the NATO Agency for Consultations, Command and Control. Intensive work is being done on the initiative “Regional approach to air defence in the Balkans” as the first project for building and establishing regional capabilities for air policing in the spirit of the “Smart Defence” concept. The Republic of Macedonia has confirmed once again that it remains committed to the efforts of the Alliance for encouraging greater cooperation and interoperability and to all initiatives that enable budget savings by pooling and joint use of the defence resources and potentials in order to be able to achieve better results.
In the context of the above, State Secretary Esmerov, who headed the delegation from the Ministry of Defence, underlined that the contribution of the Republic of Macedonia as a NATO member would be even greater.
The NATO Consultations, Command and Control Agency carries out projects and provides scientific and technical advice and support to the military structures of the Alliance, the member and partner countries regarding issues related to operations research, surveillance, air command and control including theatre missile defence, electronic warfare, airborne early warning and control, and communications and information systems.
