Military helicopter crashes near Ankara, 4 soldiers die
A Turkish military helicopter crashed on the outskirts of the capital Ankara on Tuesday, killing four soldiers on board.
The helicopter was on a training flight when it allegedly hit high-tension wires and crashed into a field about 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of downtown Ankara, media reports said. Television footage showed the helicopter broke apart into several pieces.
According to reports from news agencies, the bodies of the soldiers were sent to the Ankara Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) for an autopsy.
The soldiers who were killed in the accident have been identified as Maj. Ahmet Duman from Kırıkkale province, pilot Lt. Emre Acar from Aydın province, air technician Senior Sgt. Erdinç Salkım from Tekirdağ province and air technician Senior Sgt. Hüseyin Uluçeşme from Eskişehir province. According to a news agency report, Acar had gotten married only two months ago.
The General Staff, in a written statement released following the incident, noted that a S-70 Sikorsky helicopter had crashed near Gölbaşı, a suburb of Ankara, at approximately 11 a.m. on Tuesday, confirming that four soldiers died in the accident. Stating that a criminal and administrative investigation has been opened into the incident, the General Staff also offered its condolences to the families of the dead soldiers.
