Baris K

Sónar Sessions 2013

The master of Turkish space funk and psych disco. Baris K drops his blissed-out rhythms live at Sónar 2013 in Barcelona.

This committed wax-collector got his grounding in hip hop breaks from over a decade of producing his own weekly shows on Istanbul’s Dinamo FM and Açık Radyo. Inspired by revolutionary Turkish rock icon Baris Manco, Baris K then turned his crate-digging powers closer to home, and uncovered a treasure trove of spaced-out psych rock and hashish-stained disco. With supersized bass lines and popping guitars, held together with spacey echoes and Turkish woodwinds, Baris has cornered a dancefloor sound that’s all his own. His Eurasia mixes (featured on Beats In Space, Lovefingers, and Paris’ D.I.R.T.Y. Sound System) give us an insight into what the Turkish Space Program listen to while practicing anti-gravity moves, and prove that the line between Europe and Anatolia isn’t as clear cut as Brussels might think. Baris blurs the boundaries even further with his improvised folk bandInsanlar, a collaboration with saz player Cem Yildiz and a rotating group of guest artists. The band’s first single Kime Ne has been causing dancefloor goosebumps with its mixture of hypnotic tones and slow-build rhythms, and inaugurated Baris’ own Aboov! imprint. Combine that with 2011’s Istanbul 70series on New York’s Nublu label, and a website exploring the history of Turkish music, and it’s clear that Baris’ heart is where the homeland is.

Third and final? chapter of Rampi compilations. The first piece was also the very first version of the song I heard on a recording - typical of the multi ethnic orchestra of the 60s in "Greek America"( Greek, Armenian, Turkish, Arab musicians together). Growing up in New England, the tune Rampi was the second most popular song to dance karsilama among Greek Americans (the first was the song Marinella). The second version, from Turkey, is an unidentified orchestra of very fine musicians while the third features the third generation of clarinet among the Halkias family of Epiros. First was Periklis Halkias to whom I spent many a NY evening dancing and listening, then the legendary Petroloukas Halkias and now Petros the younger. Petroloukas Halkias spent many years in the famous 8th Ave music scene, undoubtedly playing innumerable times the tune Rampi. No relation to the Tassos Halkias of parts 1 and 2, Epiros' other great clarinet legend
