Ancient DNA Reveals Genetic History Of Early European Civilizations
BY ELANA GLOWATZ@ELANAGLOWON 08/02/17 AT 6:21 PM Although the Greeks are a famous ancient civilization, they were following in the footsteps of two other groups known as the Minoans and the Mycenaeans who lived around the Aegean Sea.
But not much is known about those two predecessors, in terms of where their people originated and how they came to inhabit mainland Greece and the island of Crete during the Bronze Age. A recent genetic analysis, however, gives scientists some insight: The Minoans and the Mycenaeans were closely related to one another, with similar but not identical DNA, and modern Greeks are descended from them.
The study, published in the journal Nature, relied on the DNA from the teeth of 19 ancient people who belonged to the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures. Comparing the ancient DNA to more than 2,600 samples from modern Greeks proves the current population is very close to the Mycenaeans genetically.
