The main railway station in the Macedonian capital of Skopje will be fully renovated by May, with improved infrastructure and a new look. Irgan Asani, infrastructure director for Macedonian Railways says that the planned investment will improve the technical standards of the station and make it more functional.
The project was prepared by the German Grontmij engineering company and it is expected to cost a total of EUR 2.9 million, provided by the European union IPA program.
"This station, which was put to function 33 years ago, was the most modern transportation center not only in Macedonia, but in the Balkans. It used to service 70 trains and 7,000 passengers daily, and its unique look represented the height of architecture at the time. But since then, not a single investment was done to the station. Our current actions will help bring back its old glory," Asani said, adding that special attention is being paid to the passengers with mobility issues.

The project will include the construction of two new passenger elevators, a new elevator for persons with disabilities and for those with extra luggage, and raising the existing sidewalks by the tracks by 55 centimeters so they reach the level of the railway cars. The station will get a new IT system, new loud-speakers, electronic entrance doors, improvement in the parking space, lighting and air conditioning and special signs for the blind.

Macedonian students, professors and scientists have the chance to use the benefits offered by the new seven-year educational programs of the European Union, Erasmus Plus and Horizon 2020, which were presented Monday at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.
Erasmus Plus is established upon the previous European educational programs Youth in Action and Life Long Learning and Horizon 2020 is one of the EU’s biggest programs for science including the Framework Program Seven.
The promotion of the new educational programs kicked off from the Skopje University, being the oldest and biggest higher educational institution that had been awarded almost 60% of the funds from the 2007-2013 programs.

“Horizon 2020, which focuses on innovative project and researches, will encourage young people and scholars to work on creative ides funded by the EU and Erasmus Plus allows student exchange and acquiring of experiences at European universities… Our message to students, the academic staff and scientists is that EU integration is more than reforms and law amendments, it also requires the way of life to be changed and improved. The Republic of Macedonia is the next seven years is once again given the chance to partake in EU programs as a candidate country,” Deputy PM for European Affairs Fatmir Besimi stated.
Between 2007 and 2013, EUR 40 million was used by various institutions in the country, universities and the private sector in different EU-led programs. Apart from EU programs, young students and scientists are also financially supported with local fellowships, namely with the year-long “Gabriela Konevska-Trajkovska” scholarship awarded by the Secretariat for European Affairs for post-graduate studies related to EU integration.
Erasmus Plus and Horizon 2020, according to Minister of Education and Science Abdilaqim Ademi, are crucial for Macedonia’s educational system because “they offer a chance to use finances and our institutions to cooperate with European institutions.”
The 7-year Erasmus Plus program, which was launched this year, has a budget of EUR 14.7 billion.
