Albania and Macedonia signed a cooperation agreement on defense issues for the year ahead, 2006
Albanian minister of defense, Fatmir Mediu was on his first official visit in Skopje, where the first meeting to taken place was that with his Macedonian homologue, Jovan Manasijevski. Albania and Macedonia, the two ministers said at the the beginning of this meeting, have excellent relationships, especially in the defense field. But Manasijevski emphasized the fact that both countries should boost the cooperation, not only on what concerns the bilateral aspect, but the cooperation with NATO forces also. The Macedonian minister added that as members of the Adriatic Chapter, our two countries and Croatia, should come with common projects on behalf of steps that must be taken in the North-Atlantic Alliance integration process. As for the Albanian defense minister Mediu, relationships between Albania and Macedonia are not based only on the good neighbourship, but olso at the repricocity of the agenda that this two countries share in the road of euro-atlantic integration.
Relationships between the two ministries and our armed Forces also, are with no doubt of a very high level and has already given by now a very clear signal of bilateral cooperation, mediu said. He also expressed his willingness for new forms of cooperation to be found in the Adriatic Chapter aspect, to pave the way for a joint operational structure that aims boosting the standards in the NATO integrations prospective. According to Mediu, Albania, Macedonia and Croatia actually do have the possibility to increase reciprocal contacts, even in the joint peacekeeping missions, to give an active role to our armies that would also have an important impact in the political aspect also. In this meeting, Mediu and Manasijevski agreed to assign a new agenda for all three countries of the Adriatic Chapter, before Nato-s Riga Summit at the end of this year. According to them, this agenda, should serve as a very important step toward the unifications in the stands and jointly acting of our countries, with the final target, the integration in the Nato structures. Another issue highly debated at the official meeting between Media and Manasijevksi was the concrete commitment that our two armies actually have in international missions, such as the SEEBRIG Brigade, part of SEDM in Afganistan, or even participating in the Freedom of Iraq operation, in Iraq. At the end of the meeting, the two ministers signed The 2006 Bilateral Cooperation Agreement. This agreement provides contacts and experience sharing by the respective Armed Forces, evolution and participation in joint operations with the very specific objective of boosting cooperation and inter-operability of the two armies, always with the goal of approaching the NATO standards. Issues also outlined at the meeting that Mediu had with the Chief of Macedonian Army Staff, Major-General Miroslav Stojanovski. After the meeting with homologue Manasijevski and general Stojanovski, Mediu also met Macedonian Prime Minister, Vllado Buckovski. Buckovski expressed his satisfaction that this meeting was being held, and this just a few days before his visit to Tirana. Buckovski also admitted that at the Riga Nato Summit a very special document must be compiled, to reflect our two countries achievements in the efforts trail of Nato integration. And for this, said Buckovski, all the three Adriatic Chapter countries should ply a bigger pressure on Nato-s actual members. Mediu supported Buckovsky-s views dhe the both liders shared the same idea that Nato Riga summit at the end of the year would be the promotion of joint achievements so that the 2008 will see both countries receive an invitation of becoming part of the North Atlantic Alliance. Mediu emphasized the fact that all the reforms undertaken in the Albanian army structures, have the full backing of the government of Albania.
After the meeting with Buckovski, the Albanian minister of defense meet also with liders of political parties in Macedonia. Mediu had special meetings with the head of the Democratic Albanian Party, Arben Xhaferri and the BDI lider, Ali Ahmeti.
