Report: Turkey, Greece close to deal on Aegean disputes
Turkey and Greece are close to reaching an agreement over territorial waters in the Aegean Sea, a Greek daily claimed on Sunday.
According to a report yesterday in Greek daily Kathimerini, Turkish and Greek Prime Ministers Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and George Papandreou are currently considering a solution in which Greece will forgo claiming 12 miles of territorial waters from the islands but will have that distance from the mainland.
The daily said if the leaders approve such an agreement, Greece would possess almost 80 percent of the Aegean Sea, which has fuelled heated debate between the two countries for a long time. Kathimerini said it received the information from anonymous diplomatic sources.
Another Greek daily To Vima also published an article with the same argument on Sunday and claimed that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague would also rule similarly on the matter. Papandreou earlier said they would apply to the ICJ only if an agreement with Turkey could not be reached.
Erdoğan and Papandreou had a two-and-a-half-hour meeting before the weekend in Athens where they also attended an international conference on climate change. According to Kathimerini, the discussion by the two leaders on Friday went ahead in a very warm atmosphere where they also discussed other topics such as the Cyprus issue, the fight against illegal migrants, visas, climate change in the Mediterranean and bilateral trade.
Report: Turkey, Greece close to deal on Aegean disputes
