A 5.1-magnitude earthquake rattled eastern Kosovo Wednesday, killing one and leaving some 50 people injured. The towns of Vitina and Gnjilane were hardest hit.
In Kosovo's capital, Pristina, about 20 miles west of Gnjilane, people rushed out of buildings in panic to find safety in the streets. Similar scenarios took place in southern Serbia, in the cities of Vranje, Presevo, and Bujanovac, as well as in the Macedonian capital of Skopje.
Many waited outside for hours as aftershocks followed the quake.
Areas in western and central Bulgaria were also hit.
The 40-second trembler was felt throughout the central Balkans. Its epicenter was about 175 miles south of Belgrade, according to the Seismological Institute of Serbia.
About 50 were injured by flying glass, most with broken bones, according to the United Nations.
Peacekeepers and local disaster response groups were setting up tents to provide emergency aid to the frightened residents who were evacuated from buildings.
Many U.S.-based denominational disaster response groups and relief agencies work with local partners in Kosovo to address people's needs in the wake of past war, drought, earthquakes, and other hardships.
After a devastating earthquake struck the region in 1963 and killed more than 1,000 people, buildings in the region were constructed to withstand some degree of shaking.
