Greece and the UAE sign mutual defence pact
Greece and the United Arab Emirates have signed a “strategic partnership” that includes an “agreement on joint foreign policy and defence cooperation,” the two sides announced on Monday, following a meeting in Abu Dhabi.
“I am happy to announce the establishment of a strategic partnership to enhance political, economic and cultural cooperation between our countries,” the Crown Prince of the UAE Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan wrote in a Twitter post.
One of the key elements of the strategic partnership agreement is the mutual defence assistance clause, which calls for aid if one country’s territorial integrity is threatened. While it does not explicitly mention third countries, the statements made by the two heads of state do so, pointing to Turkey.
“Greece and the UAE condemn Turkey’s violation of the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the Hellenic Republic and the Republic of Cyprus, as well as its overall aggressive behavior in the Middle East,” the two countries said in a joint statement after the visit.
The agreement also foresees that UAE technical staff will be trained by the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (EAV).
The cooperation between the two countries is not new, as back in May, they issued a joint statement along with Cyprus, Egypt and France denouncing “the ongoing illegal Turkish activities in the Cypriot exclusive economic zone and its territorial waters, as they represent a manifest violation of international law as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Right to the sea.”
However, the pact comes at a rather crucial time, as both sides are opposing to Ankara’s actions in the region. Reacting to the announcement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan called the pact “an alliance of evil.”
“Until the end, we will continue to defend our interests and rights in the Mediterranean Aegean Sea, in Cyprus,” Erdogan was quoted as saying by Turkish media.
