Construction of new highways by next spring
The announced modern highway from Miladinovci to Shtip, which is expected to begin next spring, in 2017 will permit driving with 120 kilometer per hour, rather than 60 as it is now. The Chinese “Exim Bank” provides the money for the construction of this road, and it is expected to approve the loan for the highway Kichevo to Ohrid.
According to the announcements of Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski after “Exim Bank” approves loans in the amount of 574 million euro without VAT it will have to be ratified in the Macedonian Parliament. Construction is expected to start three or four months after ratification, i.e. in March or April, and the two highways should be completed in three years.
The highway connecting the metropolis with Shtip is necessary given the fact that several thousand citizens of East Macedonia are commuting towards Skopje. According to the Ministry for Environment analysis, 1,500 to 2,500 vehicles use the existing regional road from Miladinovci to Shtip on daily basis, while the heaviest traffic is during working hours. With the new highway the distance between the two places will be shorter for 30 kilometers, and the journey with car will last half an hour.
Construction of highway with 47.1 kilometers is part of the current project. The route begins with the adjustment of the existing junction at Miladinovci village and connection with the existing highway Katlanovo – Veles and Petrovac – Blace. The route will continue to climb up to the hill Odhevica on 430 meters above sea level, then goes down to the river Pchinja, near the village Sredno Konjare where a bridge will be built. Hence, the route climbs to the mountain pass Derven on the south side and passes through abandoned farmland going around the existing archaeological field, then descends towards Ovche Pole field near River Perish. Once Ovce Pole is passed, the route connects with the existing road to Sveti Nikole, where junction and ring road will be built. Furthermore, the highway continues along the existing road Kadrifakovo-Shtip, where it ends.
The Ministry of Transport and Communication informed that planned highway to have 2 lanes plus one for stop.
No less significant for the western part of the country is the highway from Kichevo to Ohrid, which according to the announcements should begin at about the same time with the highway Miladinovci-Shtip . It is a motorway section of 56.7 km, starting from Kichevo, passes through places Podvis, Preseka, and Pesocani and reaches Trebenishta. Hence, the route through Podmolje is linked with Ohrid. At about two miles from Kichevo is the junction at Knezhino, which will provide entry to and exit from the city from the direction of Gostivar and Ohrid. Within the junction is determined and the road in direction to Demir Hisar and Bitola.
According to the project, this highway will have two lanes with a total width of 25.2 meters, and the route will have 6 overpassings and 13 underpassings and tunnel “Preseka”.
