Nordepirus in der Antike

Many of the region’s settlements are related with the Trojan Epic cycle. Elpenor from Ithaca, in charge of Locrians and Avantes from Evia, founded the cities of Orikum and Thronium on Vlore bay. Amantia in the mainland was founded by Avantes from Thronium. Neoptolemos of the Aekid dynasty, in charge of Myrmidones, founded a settlement which in classical antiquity would become known as Bylliace (near Apollonia). Aeneas and Helenus founded Vouthroton (modern Butrint). Moreover, a son of Helenus, named Chaon became the ancestral leader of the Epirot tribe of Chaones.[25]
Other ancient settlements in the area were Onchemos (modern Sarande) , Phoenice, Antigoneia (near modern Gjirokastër), Antipatreia (modern Berat), Amantia, Nikea, Pelion (in Dessaretis), Kemara (modern Himara). On the other hand, Greek colonists (mostly Corinthians and Eleans) founded a number of coastal cities: Avlon, Appolonia, Epidamnus.

From the early 1st millennium BC the region inhabited by the Chaones, called Chaonia, stretched north to the mouth of Aoos into the Dessaretis inland. Apart from the Chaones, which were the most significant Epirotic tribe in the area, other Epirotic tribes in northern Epirus were the Antinanes, Parauaei, Prasaivoi and northernmost tribe the Dexari (or Desarrerai). During the 7th century B.C. Chaonian rule was dominant over the region and their power stretched from the Ionian coast to the region of Korce east. Tumulus II in Kouci Zi near Korce was from that age (ca. 650 B.C.) and it is claimed that it belonged to Chaonian leaders.[25]
During classical antiquity, in 330 BC, all the Epirotic tribes were united under a single kingdom under the Aeakid Alcetas II (of the Molosians Epirotes) and at 232 B.C. the Epirotes established the 'League of Epirotes' (Greek: Κοινό Ηπειρωτών), with Phoenice as one of its centres. As a united state Epirus was a significant power of the Greek world until the Roman conquest in 167 BC.[26]
