Lincoln Memorial University W. Basketball: Edina Musa takes LMU Global by competing on the Macedonian National Team
HARROGATE, TN -- The Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team's exposure has moved beyond the national level, as Edina Musa garnered global exposure for the Lady Railsplitters as she competed as a member of the Macedonian National Team throughout the summer.
Over the past week, Edina was a key component of the Macedonian National Team as they squared off in the European Championship of the Small Countries. The championship was composed of two groups with Scotland, Moldova, Malta and Azerbaijan falling in Group A and Austria, Gibraltar, Macedonia and Wales making up Group B.
The Macedonia National Team represented their country well on that global stage as they pushed all the way into the championship game on July 16th before falling to Austria by a final score of 68-63, earning runner-up distinctions for the 2012 European Championship of the Small Countries.
In that game, Musa played a key role as she cooly drained two free throws with 2:34 left to play to tie the game at 63 apiece. However, Macedonia was unable to close the game as they turned the ball over in their next three possesions before falling in the championship.
Along the journey to the final contest, Edina Musa did an exceptional job of representing her country as well as Lincoln Memorial University. On July 11th, Musa led her team with 11 points, five steals and eight rebounds in 30 minutes of action in route to a 41-39 nail biting victory over Austria.
The Skopje, Macedonia native nearly copied those figures in the next contest as she notched a solid double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds plus a steal in an 80-61 win over Scotland. She also handed out a pair of assists in the contest.
Her best game came in a dominating win for the Macedonian National Team, as they defeated Wales by a margin of 106-48. Musa finished second on the team with 18 points on an extremely efficient 8-for-11 from the field. She also pulled in five boards in only 11 minutes of action.
"We are so proud of Edina for how she represented her country and Lincoln Memorial University on the world stage," stated LMU head coach, Roger Hodge. "What a great honor for her! Her performance in the European Championships for Small Countries only affirms what we already know-she has a great future ahead of her as a basketball player.
"Edina made great strides during this past season as a Lady 'Splitter and has obviously built upon those successes this summer. We congratulate her on an outstanding run this week and look forward to her contributions to LMU Women's Basketball this season."
At 5'10" and playing the guard for the Lady 'Splitters, Musa had a tremendous impact on LMU in her freshmen season. She played in 24 games out of a possible 27 for the Lady Railsplitters, averaging two points and 1.6 rebounds per contest.
Her finest game of the season game on February 2nd, as she notched 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field in a 64-51 win over Brevard College.
Edina Musa and the Lady Railsplitters will be returning to Lincoln Memorial University in early August as they look to begin the march towards a South Atlantic Conference title and a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
