Mazedonier in Albanien |

Christian holiday Vasilica – Old New Year was celebrated last night with songs and dances by the Macedonians in Tirana.

The celebration was attended by Macedonians originating from Vrbnik, Golo Brdo, Mala Prespa, who live in Tirana. The Ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia in Tirana Stojan Karajanov, as well as representatives of the Macedonian union “Ilinden” from Tirana, attended the event.

Temelko: Macedonians in Albania are discriminated

The Macedonian community in Albania continues to be discriminated. Our legitimate rights are not recognized nor observed. Our position vastly differs when compared to the rights of Albanians in Macedonia, Edmond Temelko, mayor of Albania’s Pustec municipality and leader of the Macedonian Alliance for European Integration, told Tirana TV station Ora News.

According to him, the right of representation in authorities and public administration is denied.
“We do not have the fundamental right of education in the mother tongue. We are dispersed everywhere, especially in areas Golo Brdo and Gora, where despite our requirements, all governments have failed to recognize us as a minority”, says Temelko.
He also refers to the draft-law on territorial division of the country.
“We ask that the new territorial division does not influence our municipality, which has 5,300 inhabitants, and the law envisages that municipalities have more than 10,000 citizens. If the municipality is annulled, then Macedonians are faced with assimilation”, says Temelko.
A meeting with Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta was held over the issue.
“He promised the reforms would not harm minorities, but Macedonians and other minorities in the county do not have a positive experience from politicians’ promises”, adds Temelko.
He stresses Macedonians are loyal citizens of Albania, but “if someone reaches for our existence, we will take all measures, including boycott and disobedience”.
