President proposed unification with Basarabia

Romanian President Traian Basescu told the Basarabia Olympics laureates on Saturday that Bucharest officials had proposed that the Moldovan Republic should join the EU together with Romania, Rompres says. Traian Basescu said: "I want to tell you something to the extent to which it can be told: Romania made an offer to the Moldovan Republic, to its president, to join the EU together with us. But this is up to Chisinau authorities and the inhabitants of the Moldovan Republic, depending on what they want to do." As Romania's EU membership talks lasted several years, President Basescu's words can be interpreted as a proposal to unify Romania and the Moldovan Republic. On Saturday he said Romania was "the only state, the only people still separated, as the German nation had become a whole again." (...)

Romania still separated

Romania is still separated in two countries. The Moldavan-Romanian unification will be achieved within the EU and no other way, the President claimed. He arranged lunch with 50 Olympics laureates from the Moldova Republic visiting Bucharest these days. Basescu told the students: "I believe you will have the power and joy to share real history even with those people in your country who don't trust it." The President reminded Romania had denounced the Robbentrop-Molotov Pact that had "split the Romanian nation in two" and outlined Romania acknowledged the will of Chisinau authorities to be separate, to be an independent state "deciding on its own Euro-Atlantic future."

Basescu described himself as a politician supporting the need to be at very good terms with the Moldovan Republic, to settle an openness that would help the neighboring state "to quicken the pace" so that the two states would become a whole again in the future, this time within the EU. He mentioned Romania's foreign affairs strategy had decided on facilities for schoolchildren and students from the Moldovan Republic to come and visit or study in Romania. (...)

Voronin-Basescu Axis

Ever since his mandate started President Basescu has managed to build special relations with Vladimir Voronin, President of the Moldovan Republic. At the end of last year the latter described 2005 as "interesting from all points of view: politically, economically and socially."

According to President Voronin, his republic's main achievement in 2005 was the making of a pro-European parliamentary coalition. As for the second one, he claims it consists in "the significant improvement of the Moldovan Republic's relations with Romania and the one hand and with Ukraine on the other hand." Voronin commented: "We truly appreciate President Basescu's fair attitude at the Moldovan Republic, at its independence and territorial integrity. We can feel Romania is most sincerely preoccupied with the difficulties the Moldovan Republic is faced with." (...)

Ja, lies mal das:

Romanians want Basarabia to unify with Romania

If there were referendum on the unification of the Moldovan Republic with Romania, 51% of Romanians would vote for it, says latest opinion poll by CIVIS.

Only 27% of Romanians citizens are more skeptical and they would go for the present state of things to stay unchanged. (...)

Most Romanians have got no knowledge of president Traian Basescu's intentions and means to achieve such unification with the Moldovan Republic. 41% say they can't answer such a question. 35% believe the president wants it, but he can't do it. Only 14% claim the head of state "neither wants nor can" proceed to unification. 10% of Romanians opine the president wants and can do it.

"Few" and "very few" foreign affairs changes

As for Romania's foreign affairs strategy, 47% of citizens can perceive "few" and "very few" changes made in the last year. 36% say the opposite. (...)

44% of the people questioned distrust the professional training of Romanian ambassadors. Only 37% of Romanians are "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with Romania's foreign affairs policy. 15% are dissatisfied with it. Only 37% express satisfaction with the activity of Romanian foreign minister Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu.

Most citizens say they are impressed with president Traian Basescu's conduct at international level. 60% of Romanian look up to the head of state, whereas only 13% express unfavorable opinion. (...) (O.B., A.M.L.)

Moldawien ist rumänisches Land, es wird mehrheitlich von Rumänen bewohnt und hat bis 1944 zu Rumänien gehört. Danach hat es die Sowjetunion annektiert.

1994 hat man bei einer Volksbefragung gefragt ob man mit der Unabhängigkeit des Landes einverstanden ist. Die Mehrheit hat dafür zugestimmt. Die Gegner der Vereinigung haben das als eine Rückhaltung der Moldauer gegenüber der Vereinigung mit Rumänien interpretiert. Die Befürworter der Vereinigung hingegen haben das als eine Bestätigung der Lostrennung von der Sowjetunion interpretiert. Moldawien hatte sich 1991 von der Sowjetunion losgetrennt ohne dass die Bevölkerung befragt wird.

So richtig weiss aber keiner ob die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung für eine Vereinigung ist oder nicht. Es bestehen auch keine Umfragen in dieser Hinsicht.

Wenn der rumänische Präsident das tatsächlich umsetzt, dann kann er sich aber seinen EU-Beitritt für die nächsten 20 Jahre in die Haare schmieren...
Im "Spiegel" oder der "Zeit" gab's in den letzten Jahren mal einen recht langen Artikel über Moldawien; da schien es, als sei die Partei, die die Vereinigung mit Rumänien befürwortet, nicht so ganz mehrheitsfähig, was vielleicht auch an der russischen Minderheit liegen könnte.

PS: Vasile, 1944 hatte Bessarabien gerade erst ein bißchen mehr als 20 Jahre zu Rumänien gehört; davor war es sehr lange Zeit russisch besetzt gewesen, um es mal möglichst pro-rumänisch auszudrücken.
