Albania rescinds visas for Russians


As of Sunday, Russians will be able to travel to Albania on a visa-free basis, a spokesman for the Albanian Embassy in Moscow told reporters earlier in the day.

The visa-free regime is to be in place till November 2010, the spokesman added, citing the 90-day private and tourist trips Russians are allowed to make.

The aim is to lure more Russian tourists into visiting the crisis-hit Albania, the spokesman said.

Albania, Kosovo police arrest suspected drug ring members


Police in Albania and Kosovo arrested three suspected members of a drug ring, Albanian authorities said on Thursday (May 27th). One was arrested in Tirana; the other two were stopped by authorities in Prizren, southern Kosovo. Police suspect that the ring smuggled drugs from Albania to Kosovo, and owned a stash of 110 kilos of marijuana that abandoned in November not far from the capital. Kosovo authorities confirmed the arrests and the suspects' apparent connection to an international drug trafficking network. EULEX says the drugs were destined for Western Europe.

Gjatë vizitës në Berat, Kryeministri Berisha përuroi përfundimin e rikonstruksionit të rrugës “Pal Golemi”, investim i buxhetit të shtetit me vlerë rreth 40 milion lekë. Kryeministri Berisha u bëri apel qytetarëve të Beratit për të ruajtur dhe konsoliduar tiparet dhe vlerat që ky qytet mbart dhe përfaqëson.

Albania: Positive twist of faith in the sectors of industry and construction


Albania’sEconomic Sentiment Indicator rose by 3.6 points in the first quarter 2010 to 89points, up 5.7% compared to the previous quarter.

This level stands 11 points below the long-term average, preserving its trendsof the last six quarters, the central bank said in a statement.



The indicator was influenced mainlyby a positive twist of faith in the sectors of industry and construction, compared with their very low levels during the last fourquarters. Business confidence in the services sector remains almost at the samelevel with previous quarters, being very close, but below its long-termaverage. On the other hand, the decline ofconsumer confidence index contributed negatively to the general confidenceindicator.

Albanien ist neues EFP-Mitglied


Das Albanian National Center of Cinematography (ANCC) ist der European Film Promotion (EFP) beigetreten. Nach entsprechender Zustimmung der EFP-Mitglieder gehört Albanien nun als 32. Mitgliedsland zum Netwerk der europäischen Filmpromotion-Organisationen. Deren Veranstaltungen werden finanziell von den Mitgliedsorganisationen, dem MEDIA Programm der EU sowie Sponsoren aus der Wirtschaft und nationalen Filmförderungen unterstützt.

"Wir freuen uns, den Beitritt unseres jüngsten Mitgliedes bekannt zu geben", so EFP-Präsidentin Éva Vezér. "Wir sind überzeugt, dass das ANCC die Diskussionen innerhalb der European Film Promotion bereichern und ebenso vom konzentrierten Wissen profitieren wird, das unsere internationale Marketing-Plattform im Verlauf der vergangenen 13 Jahre generiert hat."

Das 1997 gegründete Albanian National Center of Cinematography unterstützt die Entwicklung, die Produktion und den Verleih von Filmen mit internationalem Potenzial und fördert dadurch die kulturelle Identität und wirtschaftliche Tragfähigkeit der lokalen Filmindustrie. Seit 1997 hat das ANCC 167 unterschiedliche Projekte - die Produktion von 37 Spiel-, 20 Kurz-, 63 Dokumentar- und 39 Animationsfilmen und die Durchführung von acht Filmfestivals unterstützt. Das Hauptziel bleibt die Entwicklung neuer Kinofilme von künstlerischem Wert.

"Weltweit ist die Kraft des albanischen Kinofilms leider noch weitgehend unbekannt", erklärt Artan Minarolli, Vorsitzender des ANCC und Repräsentant bei EFP. "Wir glauben, dass uns die EFP-Mitgliedschaft und das große Know-how innerhalb des Netzwerkes helfen wird, unsere talentierten Regisseure, Produzenten und Schauspieler auf internationalem Level zu promoten und unsere Möglichkeiten für europäische Koproduktionen und den Verleih unserer Filme auszubauen. Wir sind überzeugt davon, auch unseren Beitrag für diese europäische Organisation leisten zu können."

Zu den neuesten Filmen aus Albanien gehören "East, West, East: - The Final Sprint" von Gjergj Xhuvani, "Time of the Comet" von Fatmir Koçi, und "Alive!" von Artan Minarolli.

Skundric über Kooperation mit Albanien auf dem Feld der Energiewirtschaft


Der Minister für Bergbau und Energiewirtschaft Petar Skundric und der albanische Minister für Wirtschaft, Handel und Energiewirtschaft Dritan Pifti haben in Tirana angekündigt, dass in den folgenden Monaten ein Memorandum über die wirtschaftliche Kooperation Serbiens und Albaniens unterzeichnet wird. Sie hoben hervor, dieses Dokument werde die Basis für die weitere Förderung der Kooperation sein. „Serbien und Albanien sollten die Kooperation auf allen Feldern intensivieren, und Energiewirtschaft hat den bedeutendsten Platz in dieser Zusammenarbeit“, erklärte Minister Skundric. Er bewertete, dass Serbien und Albanien die Träger der Energiewirtschaft in der Region sein sollten, mit gemeinsamen Projekten.

Albania: “264 hydropower plants will be constructed under 98 concession agreements"-Dep Min


Investmentsin building and rehabilitation of hydropowers to reach 1.8 billion euros inAlbania, the Deputy-Minister of Economy, Trade and Energy Leonard Beqiri saidduring a press conference. “264hydropower plants will be constructed under 98 concession agreements,” thedeputy-minister said.



“Morethan a third of these facilities is in final construction phase and will soonlaunch operations. We note that some of the most important projects, which willbe implemented by strategic foreign investors, include the construction ofpower plants on the Devoll and Drin rivers, which are the country's keyhydropower resources,” he added.



Albaniaheavily relies on water resources to generate energy with some 98% of totalelectricity production coming from local hydropower plants.

Albanians only need ID to travel to Kosovo


Soon, Albanian citizens will need only an electronic ID card to travel to neighbouring Kosovo, according to an agreement effective on Tuesday (June 1st), for the tourist season and possibly beyond. A reciprocal summer agreement for Kosovo citizens has been in effect in Albania for years.

In other news, the European Commission's (EC) recommendation to proceed with the process of visa liberalisation for Albania has prompted a wave of applications for biometric passports. The interior ministry said on Sunday that authorities received an unusually high number of applications late last week. The EC had just decided to recommend lifting visas requirements for Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina if three conditions are met.
