Bulgarian tourists will start visiting Albania’s Berat, if they can see relics of St. Cyril and Methodius disciples: minister

If Bulgarians learn that the relics of the disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius – Gorazd and Angelariy – are in a church in the Albanian town of Berat, tourists will arrive here every day, the Bulgarian minister without portfolio Bozhidar Dimitrov said at his meeting with the mayor of the town of Berat Edil Nasufi, FOCUS News Agency reports.

Minister Dimitrov pointed to the Bulgarian town of Sozopol as an example, saying 150,000 people visited the seaside town for two months to honor the relics of Saint John the Baptist.

This was the case in Edirne as well. After the two Bulgarian churches were renovated, the number of the Bulgarian tourists soared and the local authorities are content. Berat could become very attractive to the Bulgarian tour operators who seek new destinations, and Albania is an unknown and cheap one, he added.

/Shekulli/Telegrafi/

Albania: A success story in the fight against corruption

The eight-place climb in the Transparency International public perception of corruption index by Albania is no fluke, and comes as the realisation that Albania is taking positive strides towards their European destiny.

Albania has been one of the latecomers into the democratic European family. The communist regime ruling the country till the early 1990s, had completely isolated the nation from the rest of the world for more than forty years.

The dictatorship was so distant from the people that after its fall there was almost nothing left in the state apparatus to guide the country to a smooth passage to democracy. The 1992 elections ended 47 years of communist rule and the second half of this decade was marked by a turnover of presidents and prime ministers. Many Albanians left the country in search of work; the money they sent home remained an important source of revenue for years. Today the centre-right Democratic Party led by the former President, Sali Berisha, is in government after it was re-elected in the last parliamentary elections of July 2009, defeating the main opposition Socialists.

However the lack of any reliable state machine drove, after the fall of communism, the society to a situation of semi lawlessness, with widespread and extreme cases of corruption. In such an environment, Berisha formed the Democratic Party in the early 1990s and in 1992 became Albania's first non-communist president since the Second World War. His bid to liberalise the economy fast, increased hardships for many people. His presidency came to an end in 1997 when the collapse of a fraudulent pyramid investment schemes led to violent unrest.

As Prime Minister, Berisha promised to stamp out corruption, reduce taxation, attract greater foreign investment and develop the infrastructure. Judging him from the facts, one may come to the conclusion that he is succeeding. Let’s however follow the facts.
In June 2010 Albania was awarded the 2010 UN Public Service Award in the category of "Improving transparency, accountability and responsiveness in the public service" as a second place-winner (after Germany), for having become the first country in the world to implement 100% digital public procurement. Some days ago on October 26, 2010 the world annual listing of public perception of corruption by Transparency International, moved Albania up by 8 positions compared to 2009 ranking 87th out of 178 countries. Only in 2005 Albania ‘s ranking from the same organisation was 126th in a 158 countries list.

Last November the US Government Millennium Challenge Corporation Fiscal Year 2009 MCC Country Scorecard for Albania for the first time ever, ranked Albania above the median line for fighting corruption.

World Bank Doing Business Report 2010 ranks Albania 82nd with 3 new reforms compared to the 89th position in 2009.

The World Bank, IFC and MIGA Investing Across Borders Report 2010 ranks Albania above the OECD and the European average for:

*Investing across sectors: the score for Albania is 95%, OECD countries average is 90% and European average is 93%

*Starting a foreign business: the score for Albania is 98%, OECD countries average 71% and European average 71%.

On top of this a number of prestigious global organisations like the WTO along with reliable media like Newsweek, Wall Street Journal and Euromoney are acknowledging Albania’s improving score in the fight against corruption.

Last but not least this country has managed to double the national income over the last five years, a generous step ahead in the fight to contain corruption.

Bulgarian minister: We are satisfied with decision for Albanian census to provide field for free declaration of national identity

Tirana. Recognition of Bulgarian national minority in Albania will depend on how many people will declare their Bulgarian national identity at the upcoming census in Albania in 2011.
“We are satisfied with the decision for the upcoming census in Albania to provide a field in which people will be given the freedom to declare their national identity. It will be almost the same in Bulgaria,” said Bulgarian Minister without portfolio in charge of the Bulgarian residents abroad Bozhidar Dimitrov after meeting Albania’s Deputy Foreign Minister Edit Harxhi, FOCUS News Agency reporter informs.
“As I say – let’s see the Bulgarians in Albania, who seem very numerous in front of my office and are now much more active in their demands, let’s see them. There are no obstacles. It is not like in other Balkan counties where there is a risk for Bulgarians to express their national identity,” Bozhidar Dimitrov remarked.
