The Municipality of Ohrid is to sign a twinning agreement with the Russian city of Podolsk.
The agreement is expected to enhance the cooperation between the two cities in all areas of mutual interest, especially in tourism, as local authorities strive to attract more tourists to the Ohrid Riviera.
Podolsk is located in the Moscow Oblast, and has 187,961 citizens according to the latest 2010 census.
Ohrid has established international cooperation with many cities and organizations it shares mutual interest with in the fields of economy, tourism, culture, education and sports.

Thus far, the city has signed twinning memorandums with Kragujevac, Vinkovci, Piran, Budva, Pogradec, Jalova, Trogir, Safranbolu, the Croatian Municipality of Vidovec, the Canadian city of Windsor and other cities.

[h=3]Water quality in the Ohrid Lake is of first and second category[/h]

The controls of water quality conducted earlier this month showed that water quality in the Ohrid Lake is of first i.e. second class, which is within the allowable standards.

At the today’s press conference at the Center for Public Health in Ohrid was noted that the analysis performed on 21 water sample taken from the lake at St. Naum to Radozda, at the Macedonian part of the lake, proved that the water at the eastern part of the coast is of first class, while water is of second class at places near cities and places where are flowing in tributaries to the lake basin, which remain further as biggest polluters.

- The water in rivers Koselska, Sateska and Velgoska remain unfavorable for the quality of the water in the lake i.e. all three rivers have water that belong to the third class, which is not in accordance with the standards of the Regulation on classification of waters, said Sasho Tochkov from Center for Public Health in Ohrid.

Tochkov said that are obvious indicators that the lake continues to be loaded with organic matter and contamination from the tributaries to the lake basin.

As for the water quality water from rural water systems, the lack of water disinfection or chlorination of water remains a problem.

- In most of the rural water supply systems it is problem of lack of sanitizer which is potential danger for pollution and major health effects over people who daily use that water, said Tochkov.

Over the next month and early May, it will be conducted quality control of all public water fountains in the region of Ohrid to determine the condition given the expected heavy rain in the coming period as well as the melting of snow on the mountains, which certainly affect the quality of water from underground sources.

[h=3]Aussie town keen to establish sister-city relationship with Ohrid[/h]Labels: Diaspora, News

It's hoped sibling rivalry won't spoil a plan for the city of Queanbeyan, regional centre in south-eastern New South Wales, Australia, to adopt Ohrid in Macedonia, as its second sister city, Canberra Times reports.

The move to establish a friendship agreement with the lakeside town in the Balkans has been a project of Queanbeyan City Councillor, Velice Trajanoski, who is just one of the many Queanbeyan residents who migrated here from Ohrid.

"In Queanbeyan, first, second and third-generation Macedonians are counting around 7,000 people. About 70 to 80% are from that region, if not from Ohrid itself," he said.

Queanbeyan has had a sister-city agreement with Minami Alps, Japan, for more than 20 years. Councillor Trajanoski said this new agreement would symbolically reconnect the large Macedonian community in Queanbeyan with their homeland.

"There is not too many Japanese here so the sister city with Minami Alps is easy to run. But this is a little bit different. There are a lot more people involved," he said.

The two-term Councillor said the proposed agreement would enrich ties for the Macedonian community, but provide a benefit to the community as a whole.

"The Macedonians here already know about their rich culture, but I think it will open eyes for the Italians, the Australians and all the other cultures in Queanbeyan," he said.

In 2011, the Council agreed, in principle, to the cultural partnership. It's planned that Councillor Trajanoski will join Councillor Overall on a trip to Europe for a formal signing of the agreement in July, pending sign-off from the Council. The proposal includes USD 1,500 set aside to cover the two Councillors' accommodation costs, but Trajanoski said the money would be better spent on hosting guests in the future.

"If the rest of the Council thinks that some sort of money should be paid that is fine, but I would be personally against it. I would be pushing to have a budget set up for when they come. I don't want to be embarrassed when people come here and it's important that we are a good host," he said.

The Council will consider the proposed agreement at an extraordinary meeting on May 1.
