60th anniversary of pogroms targeting Rums marks progress in rapprochement

The attacks initiated the emigration of the Rums (Greeks of Turkey) from İstanbul, of which the population was around 65,000 at the time, and is now less than 3,000.
But while the continuation of an İstanbul local Greek population looks bleak, there has been mild influx of Greeks to İstanbul over the past six years which begs the questions: will the Greeks return?

The pogroms of Sept. 6-7, 1955 were offset by announcements that the home of Turkey's founding father Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, in the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, had been bombed.

Groups of mobsters were organized by the Turkish Army's Tactical Mobilization Group and unleashed to raid and destruct Greek-owned businesses, churches and assault Greek citizens.

For this important anniversary, journalist Serdar Korucu has compiled and published a book with never-before circulated photographs, taken by then-photographer for the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople,
Dimitrios Kalumenos. Published by İstos publishing house, the book entitled “Sept. 6/7 from the objective of Patriachate photographer Dimitrios Kalumenos” is set to hit the shelves on Sept. 11, and
will feature 60 images of destroyed Greek Orthodox churches and cemeteries (symbolic of the anniversary) that the photographer documented. Korucu was able to access these photographs with the help
of the Patriarchate's present photographer Nikolaos Manginas, as well as Kalumenos' daughter in Athens, who discussed its contents in a phone interview with Sunday's Zaman, and the story of the man behind the camera.

“Until now, we have seen many photographs of large, rich businesses in ruin but with these photographs we want to show something else, as its the destruction of churches and cemeteries that brings the incident to a whole different level,” Korucu explained.

He added, “The pogroms were not just raids on stores; there were deaths, there was rape, there were bloody incidents.”

Ah da isser ja der Sonne, mit seinem Wochenend-Spezial.

Wenn ich Spezial in Holland bestelle, bekomme ich wenigstens was.

Pommes mit Soße Mayo und Zwiebeln. Ich find das schmeckt gut.
