Opa! Marietta Greek Festival celebrates 25th year
H7F1_MDJ_05_15_15__B1_.jpg

MARIETTA — More than 20,000 people are expected to crowd Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church on Trickum Road this weekend as the county’s Greek community kicks off the 25th annual Marietta Greek Festival.

The festival, which begins today, started in 1990 as an effort to showcase cultural traditions of the metro Atlanta Greek community, according to Jim Niarchos, Marietta Greek Festival board member.

Niarchos said the event, the largest of its kind in the county, was started by a local family and attracted between 3,000 and 4,000 people.

“(It) was made a reality a quarter of a century ago when parish council member Joe Gavalas and his wife, Donnis, agreed to step up and chair a festival that would share the Hellenic culture with patrons from around the metro Atlanta area.”

The festival has more than quintupled since its infancy and now draws about 20,000 people, said Steve Tingas, former festival chairman.

“We’re all volunteers,” Tingas said. “We enjoy doing it. It gives us an opportunity to share our culture through food and music and dance, and also share our Greek Orthodox Christian religion. We expect a big year this year. It’s our 25th anniversary — as long as the weather holds up.”

The forecast for Marietta is a high of 78 degrees on Friday, a high of 80 degrees Saturday and a high of 83 degrees Sunday. Thunderstorms are forecast for all three days, according to the National Weather Service.

The festival will feature a live Greek band from Dayton, Ohio, playing traditional Greek songs, Hellenic dance troupe performances and a mixture of jewelry, clothing and souvenir vendors. Attendees can also take a guided tour of Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church.

While the three-day celebration proffers a large sampling of Greek culture, Tingas said one of the festival’s biggest attractions is the authentic food served, which are all homemade dishes. A range of traditional cuisines will be served, including gyros, souvlaki, baklava, spanakopita and Greek wine and beer.

“We actually cook our own food,” he said. “We don’t have restaurants or vendors like you would normally find at a festival. We cook everything for all 20,000 people. It’s our church volunteers that cook; we do it all ourselves. I would say a dish that I favor is called pastitsio. It’s kind of a Greek lasagna that has noodles. I really just can’t wait.”

Some of the proceeds from the festival will benefit local charities, Tingas said, including Jacob’s Ladder, a neurodevelopmental school and therapy center in Roswell, and the WellStar Foundation.

“As far as our church community, it brings everybody together,” he said. “As far as the financial impact, we support some of the ministries. Some of the money goes to outside charities. The financial benefit is important. It benefits the community in addition to the charities and the ministries. They get a taste of the Greek culture.”

Free parking will be provided at Simpson Middle School, Lassister High School and the Church of Latter Day Saints and shuttle bus service will be provided to and from the event.

Poesie des Psarantonis an Deus (Zeus, Theos, daher: Theologie)
The #mindpower project of Latvia’s EU Presidency’s Cultural Program has taken Rainis and Aspazija to Greece and Cyprus in its 20th and 21st episodes.

Greek composer and singer Psarantonis (Antonis Xylouris) is known for his playing of the ancient instrument the lyre. Born in the mountain village of Anogeia in Crete, he has recorded more than 30 albums since the 1960s and performed across Europe, North America and Australia. His trademark whisper-to-a-scream dynamic delivery has been honed since the age of nine, when he started playing traditional wedding feasts.

"
Παλμός ο κανονικός είναι η φύση, ο Θεός Δίας"

“The future is now,” says Rainis (played by Goran Gora) as he closes an Apple MacBook in episode #20 of #mindpower and teleports us to the streets of Crete, where Psarantonis reads his raspy rendition of Aspazija’s poem “Silk Veil” from the collection “An Armful of Flowers” (1911). The poem singles out music as one of the divine expressions of a small nation boasting a great cultural heritage.

In episode #21 we meet Greek Cypriot fashion designer Kika Ioannidou, who together with Aspazija (played by Eva Ikstena-Strapcāne), reads an aphorism by Rainis comparing and contrasting the Sun and love amongst people. While Cyprus’ leading fashion house founder basks in the sun of her island-nation home, Latvia’s literary feminist matriarch does the same in the foggy tower of St.Peter’s Church in Riga.

The Culture Programme of the Presidency of the Council of the EU has launched a series of conversational video vignettes honoring the 150th anniversary of poets Rainis and Aspazija, considered among the founding literary, political and social figures who began building the Latvian nation more than a century ago.
Dubbed #Domasspēks (#mindpower), the videos star troubadour Goran Gora and LTV news anchor Eva Ikstena-Strapcāne as the “first couple” of the national mindset, convincingly costumed to be hosting and remarking most wisely upon a series of current-day European thinkers bringing the turn-of-the-century socio-philosophical pioneering to an up-dated context.
