Biggest deflation in half a century

Major drop in demand and in imports signalled a 2 percent annual shrinking of prices in October

The Greek consumer price index (CPI) posted its biggest decline, by 2 percent, last month on a yearly basis since February 1962, when deflation amounted to 2.1 percent, according to official data released on Friday by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

Greece's economy shrank by 3 percent in the third quarter compared with the same period last year, its smallest such decline in nearly three years, thanks to a rebound in tourism.
The flash estimate of gross domestic product released by statistics service ELSTAT on Thursday marked the smallest fall in economic output since the third quarter of 2010. Economists had forecast a 3.1 percent contraction.
"The reading was broadly in line with expectations, reflecting mainly the positive impact of strong tourism revenues," said economist Platon Monokroussos at Athens-based Eurobank. "The figure supports our forecast for a full-year reading less than -4.0 percent."

The jobless rate held steady at 27.3 percent in August, more than twice the average rate in the euro zone of 12.2 percent in September.

Cyprus Q3 GDP falls 0.8 pct as tourism gives seasonal lift
The decline in Cyprus's economy slowed in the third quarter of the year as tourism gave the bailed-out island a brief respite and seasonal lift.
Preliminary data showed it contracted 0.8 percent for the July to September period from 1.8 percent in the second quarter - 5.7 percent on a yearly basis, compared to 5.8 percent.
