Macedonia's Canning Industry Sees Record-breaking Production
Macedonia's canning industry marks a record-breaking production this year, including quality products, however technological equipment needs to be improved.
By following the technological development, costs will be reduced and the profitability of plants will be increased.
On Wednesday, Italian companies presented novelties in the technology for processing and packaging fruits and vegetables to local companies at an event organized by the Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) within the Italian embassy in Skopje.
"Macedonia's industry with top quality products is becoming more and more developed, while in Italy we have a developed technology for this industry, thus we think the time has come to improve the technological conditions in Macedonia. We believe this industry is very vital because it participates with three percent in Macedonia's GDP," stated Cinzia Bruno, ICE director in Skopje and Sofia.
The four Italian companies attending the event are leading manufacturers of technology that can adjust their products to the needs of the Macedonian food companies, which are mostly small and medium-sized.
"Italy is Macedonia's third partner in the export of food products, which means that it appreciates Macedonian food products. It is a vital moment in the idea to establish cooperation between these two industries," said Bruno.
Italy and Macedonia are traditional partners in all sectors, especially in agriculture, where many opportunities have been left unexhausted, according to Italian Ambassador Massimino Bellelli.
The agricultural sector and food industry in Macedonia are known for their good quality, but there are still technologies and systems for processing food products that are not suitable to the demands of modern markets, according to Bellelli.
2015 has been a record-breaking year for the canning industry in Macedonia, said Saso Risteski, director of the association of manufacturers of canned products.
"Climate conditions have been great, there were enough raw materials here and in the region and I believe we'll register production much higher than ever before," he noted.
There are more than 40 active plants that process fruit and vegetables. Over 80% of the products are exported.
The European Union (over 50%) is the main market with the German one being the largest. It is followed by Serbia and the other countries in the region. Certain amounts of products are also exported in Australia, Canada and the United States.
