Tourismusziel - Mazedonien

[h=3]Korab Mountain - An Extraordinary Site[/h]

With gigantic peaks forming a natural frontier between Macedonia and Albania, Mount Korab is Macedonia's highest mountain, an adjacent to Sara Mountain and one of most beautiful eye-catching sites, part of Mavrovo National Park.

Korab Mountain has numerous peaks, higher than 2,000 m. Its range goes over 40 km, between the lower part of Black Drin River and Radika.

The rugged mountain massif consists mainly of shale and limestone of the Paleozoic with block structures, as well as severely damaged gypsum rocks of Permo Triassic. On the west side, the mountain falls steeply over rock walls. The north side consists of craggy rocks.

On the same ridge, there are two other peaks rising over 2,700 m, Shulani i Radomires and Korab III. The southeast, stretching from a few rock bands broken meadows to the summit, is accessed very simply, and occasionally by shepherds with their flocks of sheep.

The peak, located about two kilometers southwest, Korab-gate (Maja e Portat Korabit / Korapska Mala vrata) reaches 2,727 m. A few hundred yards south is another peak, Maja e Moravës, which is 2,718 m, which is only a little lower.

The peaks are occasionally ruptured by radial tectonics in the shape of blocks that end in the Radika Valley on the Republic of Macedonian side. These blocks occasionally have steep slopes that reach up to 500 m (1,640 ft). In its highest part, above 2,000 m (6,562 ft), the climate is alpine and includes some alpine flora elements.

Korab Falls, in the upper valley of the Dlaboka River, are also one of the most extraordinary sites in this area. During spring time, the waterfall reaches a height of over 130 m, which makes it the highest in Macedonia. The state border intersects the higher peak, Great Korab. Ascent from the Republic of Macedonian side involves entering the Republic of Macedonian-Albanian boundary area, for which a special permit is required from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia, although people regularly track on Korab without having it.

MARCH 10, 2014BY ALEKSANDRAIN MACEDONIACOMMENTS

Travel around the world in a day – this opportunity is offered this year by the largest tourism fair in the world held in Berlin from 5 to 9 March 2014, where Macedonia presented its tourist offer.

International Tourism Exchange ITB again this year is a forum for presentation of 180 countries and approximately 11,000 exhibitors in the field of tourism. Tour operators, agencies, hotels, airlines, booking systems offer their complete tourist offer. Macedonia traditionally presents its offers at this fair, organized by the Agency for Promotion and Support of Tourism (ALMP).
-ITB Tourism Fair is a fair where each country that pays attention to the development of tourism as an economic sector must be represented. The very participation of 180 countries fair offers a glimpse into the world tourist offer, a great opportunity to make contacts in one place that would otherwise be scattered across the world, to see new things and what has been done and still can be done. Macedonia’s attendance at such fairs is more than necessary because it is a good opportunity for a general presentation of the country. This year we have offered a beautiful and diverse postcard for our country at the largest tourism fair in the world, held from 5 to 9 March in Berlin, Ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia to Berlin, Kornelija Utevska Gligorovska said.
- ALMP had another successful and proper presentation of Macedonian tourism product and investment opportunities in tourism to the German tour operators of the most important tourism fair in Europe, ITB 2014. [h=3]Macedonia: Interest for Visiting Galichica National Park Rises[/h]

The number of tourists visiting Galichica National Park is rising over the years.

Some of the tourists who come to Ohrid visit Galichica as well, but, according to data by the National Park, there are also tourists who come precisely for its beauties and their interest for this type of recreation.

"There has been a growth in the number of visitors of about 10%," said Naumche Noveski from the National Park's administration office. According to him, data showed that the number of local Ohrid residents visiting the park is growing too, that people change their habits and spend more time recreating in nature.

The number of visitors to Galichica is registered by electronic devices, placed on the park's main entrances. These devices record the number of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

According to the Park's office employees, the raised interest owes to the active promotion of Galichica National Park in the recent period, as well to the Park's administration website that offers many useful information.

For a better organized stay in the park, amendments to the Law on Natural Protection have been adopted, as well as to the Law on National Parks, introducing licensed tourist guides for all visitors who come to the park as a group.

"The new legislation opens more possibilities for new financing sources. We have two licensed guides for the national park and according to the legal provisions, tourists guides cannot take visitors to the park without being controlled. Every guest group now has to be reported and led by a guide who has been properly trained and certified," Noveski explained.

Galichica National Park covers a space of 25,000 hectares, stretching between the Ohrid and the Prespa Lake. There are mapped trails on its mountain slopes, as well as cycling trails with the total length of 350 kilometers.

Why Skopje is a small city with a big heart, and 16 reasons why the west is best and your chance to escape to Santorini

Bridge of sighs: the Art Bridge in Skopje was built as part of the city's renovations. Photograph: Robert Mullan

Why go?
Skopje's skyline tells the story of this Balkan city more vividly than any history book: socialist-era apartment blocks, the minarets of Ottoman mosques, Byzantine domes, Turkish bathhouses and, most controversially, neoclassical edifices, bridges and grandiose monuments – the result of a recent construction spree aimed at bolstering national pride. Now the building dust has settled, visitors will find much to delight and intrigue them.

What to do
Get lost in the narrow lanes of Caršija, Skopje's most atmospheric neighbourhood. Here, you'll find Daud Paša Baths, once the largest Turkish hammam in the Balkans, now home to the National Gallery ofMacedonia (nationalgallery.mk). Cross the Vardar River on the 15th-century Stone Bridge to Macedonia Square with its triumphal arch, statues of national heroes and illuminated fountains. On the slopes of Mount Vodno, a few miles out of town, the 12th-century St Pantelejmon Monastery is a treasure trove of Byzantine art. After you've admired the beautiful frescos, hike, or take the gondola, up the mountain.

Where to stay
Urban Hostel is Skopje's best budget option, with a choice of dorms, twin rooms or self-catering apartments in Debar Maalo, a lively neighbourhood full of bars and restaurants (dorms from €13, apartments from €46, urbanhostel.com.mk).

Where to eat
Stara Kuka is the place to try Macedonian specialities, such as stuffed peppers, shopska salad, bean stew and barbecued pork ribs, in a 19th-century house with carved wooden ceilings (starakuka.com.mk).

Insider tip
"Walking along the Kej and eating in the restaurants that line the river is a must," says Kathleen Beccue, who runs the K8 American bakery and café in the Old Town (k8skopje.com). "Plaza de Toros and Anja are a couple of my favourites. After dinner, buy an ice cream and walk to Macedonia Square. At dusk you'll be treated to the call of the hooded crows which roost in the parks around the city."
