Easy UEFA Draw for Macedonian Clubs, Vardar in Crybaby mode
Monday, 25 June 2012
Macedonian champion FC Vardar got the Belarus champion Bate Borisov in today's UEFA draw in the second round of the Champions League.
FC Vardar's coach Ilcho Georgievski went in overdrive today after his side drew the 'most difficult' team and is already looking for alibi. Ironically, Georgievski was Makedonija GP's coach when the Skopje based club faced off against Bate Borisov several years ago. Prior to that match too the coach stated his team would have a tough time beating the Belarus side. With that sort of attitude, it is exactly what happened, Makedonija GP lost both matches 2-0, even though Bate Borisov at no point of the match looked like the better side.
Ilcho Georgievski perhaps failed to notice that his current squad at FC Vardar is ten times better than the squad he was coaching at Makedonija GP.
According to MINA's Pero Stamatovski, Bate Borisov is perhaps the weakest team Vardar could have gotten. What about Partizan, Dinamo Zagreb, Basel... they all play at much higher level than Bate.
"We have a case of a coach that would be fired should Vardar not pass Bate Borisov, and this is why Ilcho is seeking an alibi prior to the match, he knows what's on the line" says Stamatovski.
Skendija will face off against Portdown of Northern Ireland. Metalurg will face Birkirkara from Malta and Renova will meet with the bankers and firemen from Libertas, San Marino.
The only thing to say here is all Macedonian clubs should be very pleased with the draw.
Games in this year's Euro League (former UEFA Cup) start on July 5th.
