Report: More than 30,000 Turks are in European jails
More than 30,000 Turks are in prison in European Union countries and a large number of them have been imprisoned for crimes related to drugs, according to a report in the Taraf daily on Sunday.
According to findings from the Turkish parliamentary Human Rights Commission that were released after members of the commission visited Germany last week, Germany is the European country with the highest number of Turks in prison, followed by the Netherlands and Belgium, the Taraf daily reported.
Sixty percent of the Turks imprisoned in Germany are jailed for crimes related to using or selling drugs, according to the report.
The Human Rights Commission visited a prison with a capacity of 800 near Munich last week and found that 52 of the prisoners there were Turkish citizens; 30 of the 52 had been imprisoned for drug-related crimes.
